Liverpool hit with HUGE Curtis Jones transfer warning
Liverpool are reported to have several midfielders in their contract renewal schedule.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are top of the queue - with contracts which expire in 2028.
Those two - along with Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister - joined the Reds back in 2023 - and seem to be Richard Hughes’ priorities when it comes to handing out new deals.
It’s not going to be cheap either with Szoboszlai, 25, and Gravenberch, 23, emerging as two of the best midfielders in the world over the last couple of years.
Liverpool’s sporting director is going to have to break the bank to land new deals for the midfield pair - and it remains to be seen what’s left over for the rest.
Curtis Jones' contract expires in 2027
We wouldn’t expect Endo to be offered a new contract at this stage - with his deal running out in 2027 - and it would appear Mac Allister is entering a make-or-break phase of his Liverpool career as far as a new contract is concerned.
But one player strangely overlooked in the contract shakeup thus far is Curtis Jones.
The 24-year-old homegrown midfielder has become integral to Arne Slot’s cause this season - putting a marker down as one of the most progressive midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues.
The England international has got leadership credentials and could stake a claim to becoming the next captain after Virgil van Dijk. For that to happen though Liverpool need to move fast.
Tottenham interested in Curtis Jones
Jones is out of contract in summer 2027 - less than 18 months - and it’s all been eerily quiet over talks for a new deal.
This week the club received a warning over Jones’ future with reports that Tottenham were seeking to exploit the situation and make a bid for his services.
Sensing a market opportunity for Jones prior to their move for Conor Gallagher the North London club were perhaps intending to capitalise on Jones’ uncertain contract picture.
Although Jones is now a veteran of over 200 Liverpool matches the last time he had a renewal was back in 2022 - when he was still a junior member of the squad.
Liverpool need to sort out new Jones contract
This would indicate that the schemer is one of the lesser-paid members of the first-team squad - and Richard Hughes needs to adjust his pay and conditions accordingly.
Jones will be well aware of his value to Liverpool due to characteristics that other midfielders in the squad simply don’t have. And so Liverpool will have to play the next step perfectly if they want to tie up a fresh contract for him.
The danger is Jones and the club fail to come to a new arrangement - putting Liverpool perilously close to the territory in which they will have to offload him before his terms expire.
Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Spurs may well have moved to Gallagher after their attempts to prise Jones out of Anfield backfired. But there still is a long way to go before the playmaker’s future is secured.
