Liverpool HAVE to act after Fabrizio Romano confirms agreement
It's not often that Fabrizio Romano makes two 'here we go' tweets for the same player in the space of a few months.
Unfortunately, for Liverpool fans this has happened with Marc Guehi. We still remember the glory days. The summer when it felt like the Reds were going to win everything after the transfer window they had.
Especially on the last day of the window. When Romano posted his 'here we go' tweet for Guehi to Liverpool, the dopamine rush was incredible.
He was the final piece of the jigsaw, the centre-back Liverpool desperately needed having not signed a senior centre-back apart from Giovanni Leoni since Ibrahima Konate.
But then Palace stood in the way. Oliver Glasner threatened to quit and that was that, Guehi had to stay.
Liverpool's season started to derail after that. Nothing has been the same since the September international break.
The Reds have gone on a terrible run every since and are now left just fighting for the top four in the Premier League. Leoni's injury that he suffered at the start of the season has also ruled him out for the rest of the campaign, leaving the club with just three recognised first-team centre-backs.
Yet even this situation has not forced Liverpool to act despite being in the January transfer window. Somehow the club think that even though Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are both injury prone they will be able to ride it out until the end of the season.
It's probably going to cost Liverpool's hopes of having a run in the Champions League and maybe even getting that top four or top five finish.
Long-term it's going to mean not being able to attract the primary targets that they want to bring.
Short-term it looks like it's going to end up with Guehi joining Manchester City.
Because Romano has posted a 'here we go' for Guehi. This time though, it's Manchester City that have agreed a deal to sign him.
Guehi has seemingly agreed a deal with Man City as well, which means he is closing in on a move to the Etihad. The Palace captain will not be involved in their game at the weekend, indicating just how close this transfer now is.
And it should force Liverpool to act.
They've been waiting it out for Guehi, wanting to sign him in the summer. Now they can't do that because City have swooped in, and agreed a fee in the region of £20m, £15m less than what Liverpool agreed in the summer.
Surely, that is worth it?
For a player you were going to sign anyway and who you had agreed to sign for £35m, Liverpool now spending £20m to get him still makes sense. Especially when you look at the centre-back situation.
The Reds have no choice but to act. They can't lose another target to City after Antoine Semenyo went there as well.
