Obviously, since Andoni Iraola was only appointed in July, there are still a couple of teething problems that need to be solved but, once they're done and out of the way, things should be able to run a lot smoother.

However, some of these problems can't just be fixed overnight and could end up forcing Liverpool to re-enter the transfer market.

With this in mind, several players have already been linked with an Anfield switch and now, they may have just stumbled across a player who could become their very own Declan Rice.

Lucas Da Cunha is now on Liverpool's midfield shortlist

Liverpool's midfield is probably the main area of their squad that's causing them issues at the moment.

They do have four options at their disposal but, when Dominik Szobsoszlai and Ryan Gravenberch can't be used alongside one another, it's far from ideal.

Independently, both players are exceptionally talented but, in Iraola's system as a double pivot, they're woeful.

Each of them push up to the top of the pitch at the same time which leaves a huge gap for others, such as Florian Wirtz, to plug.

This is why so many new number sixes have been linked with Liverpool.

And now, thanks to an update from TEAMtalk another defensive midfielder has made his way onto the Reds' shortlist.

"Fabregas’ decision has paid dividends, with Da Cunha flourishing in the new role, becoming Como captain and going from relative obscurity to earning a place in one of international football’s most prestigious squads," they wrote.

"Despite his fresh long-term contract, TEAMtalk understands that Premier League interest has not gone away.

"Chelsea remain particularly attentive to Da Cunha’s development as they continue to plan for the future, with the club understood to be firmly in the market for a midfielder in 2027.

"Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are also understood to be monitoring the situation closely."

Lucas Da Cunha could become Liverpool's version of Declan Rice

Liverpool's fanbase have known for a while now that their team were in desperate need of a new midfielder or two.

In fact, when Curtis Jones chose to exit in the summer, most people thought that a new one would be brought in as his replacement.

That didn't end up being the case and now, it seems like the Reds are drafting up a fair few different options for them to pursue in the future.

And, of the lot, Cunha is probably one that most fans won't have heard of.

At the moment, the Frenchman plays for Cesc Fabregas' Como and has quickly become one of his most important players.

In fact, thanks to his recent performance Zinedine Zidane has even called him up to France's national squad.

By trade, the 25-year-old is a defensive midfielder but, much like Arsenal's Rice, he can also contribute in attack if needed.

Defensively, the midfielder is sound and, his arrival would certainly help Liverpool shore up their first-team squad.

A price for Cunha wasn't mentioned by TEAMtalk but, compared to the fees paid for others such as Enzo Fernandes and Elliott Anderson, his fee will be minimal.

Liverpool have a lot of decisions to make in the future but, for now, Cunha feels like a good player for them to target.
