Liverpool eyeing move for 'excellent' midfielder, it's not Lamine Camara

Since the summer transfer window shut at the start of September, Liverpool have been linked with many new players.

Obviously, deals for new players to make the switch to Anfield can't be struck until the window opens up again but, the fact that Liverpool are building up their shortlist of potential targets is encouraging.

Over the summer, it felt like Richard Hughes didn't really have much of a plan to replace Mohamed Salah apart from Yan Diomande.

And, when that deal fell through, he chose to turn his attention towards Bradley Barcola who was going to be the Reds' fourth left-winger among their squad.

Obviously, thanks to his versatility, he can play as a right-winger if needed but, they'd be much better of with a natural right-winger among their ranks.

Admittedly, bringing a new right-winger in should be one of Liverpool's main priorities but, since they also have another couple of areas that could do with an upgrade or two, it's hardly surprising to see players in those areas being targeted too.

Como's Lucas Da Cunha is now being monitored by Liverpool

One of the other main areas that Liverpool need to bolster is their midfield.

The Anfield outfit only have four options for their double pivot at the moment with one of them being 19-year-old Trey Nyoni.

And, as they have already proven, neither Dominik Szoboszlai nor Ryan Gravenberch can really perform all that well in a double pivot just yet.

When played alongside one another, they often leave a massive gap in the middle of the park which has resulted in Florian Wirtz covering the most ground of any Liverpool player in almost all of the games he's featured in.

So, the fact that TEAMtalk are now reporting that the Anfield outfit have added the "excellent" Lucas Da Cunha to their shortlist makes a lot of sense.

"Fabregas’ decision has paid dividends, with Da Cunha flourishing in the new role, becoming Como captain and going from relative obscurity to earning a place in one of international football’s most prestigious squads," they wrote.

"Despite his fresh long-term contract, TEAMtalk understands that Premier League interest has not gone away.

"Chelsea remain particularly attentive to Da Cunha’s development as they continue to plan for the future, with the club understood to be firmly in the market for a midfielder in 2027.

"Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are also understood to be monitoring the situation closely."

Liverpool need to bring a new central midfielder to Anfield soon

Even though Liverpool already have four options for two positions in their starting XI, upgrading those options wouldn't go amiss.

Of course, the fact that Gravenberch and Szoboszlai have both just signed new long-term deals causes a bit of an issue as, neither of them will want to leave and, even if they did, Liverpool would have to demand a small fortune to allow them to move on.

That's why talk of Mac Allister exiting has been rife. However, since his return from the 2026 World Cup, the midfielder has been in the form of his life and has arguably been one of Liverpool's best players this season.

Obviously, in terms of value, this is good news for the Reds but, it does beg the question of whether they'd actually want to move their best midfielder on, even if his contract is set to expire in June 2028.

But, before any of this even happens, at least one new midfielder needs to be brought in, preferably a number six.

Because, as good as Iraola's four midfielders are, none of them are natural defensive-midfielders which, in the Spaniard's system, is rather worrying.

No deals have been agreed just yet but, a move for someone such as Cunha or Lamine Camara would make an awful lot of sense.

That is, especially with how desperately a new central midfielder is at Liverpool.
