Liverpool gift academy star the opportunity of a LIFETIME
Liverpool have given one academy star the opportunity of a lifetime. Will he be able to take it?
The January transfer window is now shut and we know what Liverpool's first-team squad will look like for the rest of the season. And that's remarkably similar to the first-half of the season but minus a few players.
Not because they were willingly sold, either. Liverpool are down a few because of injuries, with both Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley gone for the season.
Alexander Isak is still a while away from returning, too, while Jeremie Frimpong is now also out again. But Liverpool ultimately decided that those absences would hinder them all that much.
They'll still compete to win UEFA Champions League and to qualify for it next season. But doing so will mean digging deep in this squad - particularly if there are further injuries.
Calvin Ramsay's opportunity
It was thought that Calvin Ramsay could leave Liverpool on deadline day, with a potential loan suggested. That didn't materialise, however, despite reported offers for the Scot.
And now he's got a real opportunity. Liverpool have just one fit, natural right-back in their squad and it's Ramsay.
It should be said that Arne Slot would prefer to play Dominik Szoboszlai in the role. Maybe Joe Gomez, too. But injuries threaten both those ideas between now and the end of the campaign.
We saw how Wataru Endo ended up there against Qarabag, for instance. If Ramsay were available in the Champions League, we imagine he'd have been given those minutes on the right.
And so the chance is still there for Ramsay to get some sort of minutes at the first-team level over the next couple of months. He's got a chance to make a name for himself, should the opportunity arise, even if securing a long-term future at Anfield will be difficult.
His impressive showing against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup earlier this term was a sign he can do it. Now he just needs the cards to fall his way and Ramsay can end up doing it on a bigger stage.
He's been gifted that opportunity by remaining at Liverpool and by the Reds failing to sign any sort of temporary alternative. Let's see if it leads to anything.
