Gary Neville is STRUGGLING with Liverpool's 20th title win
It’s been a horrible, horrible week for Gary Neville.
First, he had to watch Liverpool win the league for the 20th time - live and in colour - matching the total won by his beloved Manchester United. And at Anfield too.

Then he put on his little rucksack and scampered down from the gantry to avoid a bit of banter - instead of recording the Gary Neville Podcast.

What an all-time loss to the world of broadcasting.
“I put my backpack on, we ran, we went for it and we got right out onto the concourse and beat everyone,” he said by way of an excuse to the It’s Called Soccer podcast.
“However, what I didn't then imagine was the carnage and the people outside. I got absolutely abused and, yeah, I snapped at a few people.
"I mean, look, a lot of them were in good spirits as you would imagine but they just abused me.
“And then, to be fair, a guy on the M60 on the way home, honestly, I've never been aggressive in my life, but if I could have pulled over...yeah, it wasn't a great last half-hour for me after the game."
Poor Gary.
'I don't feel like I was watching the title-winners'
It was quite possibly the worst ending to the season he could imagine. Because Nev has been backing against the Reds all year. And that's without even mentioning his pathetic defence of David Coote.
Making his picks for the 2024/25 Premier League season for Sky Sports, Neville predicted Arsenal would win the league.
Liverpool? Fifth.
Now I know a lot of us didn’t expect the Reds to win the league but fifth? Never mind, when he got an opportunity to put that right over the Christmas and New Year period when Liverpool were flying, he’d surely take it. Right? Not quite.
Arsenal top he said. Liverpool second.
He even backed Spurs to get a result in the EFL Cup at Anfield. SPURS. They lost 4-0 in maybe the most one-sided game at the ground until last Sunday.
Talk about hoping against hope.
There's more evidence. He’d said after the game against Wolves in September that he didn’t feel like he’d just watched the champions.
"They're going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football," he told the Gary Neville Podcast.
"I didn't feel like I was watching title winners being honest with you. They're well below Arsenal and City but I don't think that's shocking anybody."
Well below.
Again, after we beat the same team in February, he said Arsenal should be encouraged by how close-run the result ended up being.
"It was a good day for Liverpool and it was also a little bit of a good day for Arsenal,” he said. "Maybe in the sense that, hang on a minute Wolves are near the bottom of the league and Liverpool just got over the line today, but if you're Liverpool you know you're not going to win every game well.
"You know that there's going to come a point where a team are going to just catch you out a little bit and they've got two big games coming up now this week Liverpool. They couldn't afford to drop points today."
No one did manage to catch them out that week would you believe.
But he’s right, Wolves are good. They beat Man Utd at Old Trafford for example.
ChatGPT says Man Utd are massive
He has been ACTIVELY rooting against Liverpool all season long and trying to dress it up as enlightened opinion.
Since we wrapped up the league title, Nev has been using his position as the most prominent pundit in English football telling people in public that he thinks Man Utd are still the biggest club in England.
He’s even got ChatGPT - yes, ChatGPT, the glorified search engine that cannot count the ‘R’s in ‘Strawberries’ - to admit it.
"I will always maintain Manchester United are the biggest football club in this country, and that will never change," he said. "100 per cent, it's not even a debate.”
The Man Utd links are continually embarrassing; it’s not that long since he tried to claim they had a better midfield than we had. In fact it was sort of right before we beat them 3-0 at Old Trafford.
“I think in midfield, if I look at Manchester United’s midfield players, if you add equal coaches – and we don’t know what Erik ten Hag and Arne Slot are going to match up like – I do think Liverpool, with [Wataru] Endo, [Dominik] Szoboszlai and [Alexis] Mac Allister, they’ve done unbelievably well to get the performance levels out of those three that they have with Jurgen Klopp,” he told the Overlap.
"I really do question [whether] that midfield three is going to stand up throughout the season. If it does again, I’ll take my hat off to them, ‘well done, unbelievable, you’ve proven me wrong’. I think Manchester United have got more in midfield, more depth, good players in there. Kobbie Mainoo has come into that midfield alongside Casemiro. [Bruno] Fernandes is in there, Mason Mount, McTominay – they’ve got five players in there.”
He should be taking that hat off any second now. Especially since Ten Hag and McTominay aren’t even at the club anymore.
Arsenal last season are better
Or maybe not. Because as recently as March he was playing down how good Liverpool were. He actually said the Arsenal of last season was better than the Arne Slot team. That was despite all the evidence to the contrary.
"Arsenal still should have been closer to them,” he told Sky Sports News. "Arsenal of last season are as good if not better than the Liverpool of this season, so Arsenal should be neck and neck with Liverpool.”
I’m not sure if even he believes this stuff. What we would have given to hear from Nev last Sunday at Anfield; he usually records the podcast straight after full-time.
We were denied, alas. Had to get off. Beat the rush. Fantastise about beating up a triumphant fan on the motorway.

It’s been a great season for the Reds. Slot has achieved more than many of us expected. And a lot more than what Neville thought they could do. Looking forward to next season’s predictions and whether he thinks the Reds can win No21.
