For others, it's a time when they are desperately searching for new clubs and trying to determine their fate.
Some players also use their free time to build on their careers, on and off the pitch. The period before pre-season is what you make of it.
Whatever you do can often impact how you perform in pre-season and so on.
One Liverpool youngster has used his time off to make an important visit in London at a closed event, which highlights his exciting potential.

The player in question is Joshua Sonni-Lambie. He was invited to the Nike Elite Summit in London this week, which was hosted at Tottenham's training ground.
Sonni-Lambie shared photos of himself at the even on his Instagram page.
The summit was an exclusive event for some of Nike's finest young athletes and included women's and male's England youth internationals.
In total about a dozen young athletes were invited to the event, which saw them participate in a number of challenges and talks, including a conversation between Gareth Southgate and Ben Foster.
It was an opportunity for Nike's young talents to learn more about the game and grow more skills.
Sonni-Lambie's invite alongside Manchester City and Arsenal players, shows just how highly rated he is.
Nike only invited their finest young athletes for this event in London, the fact that Sonni-Lambie was one of them bodes really well for his talent and demonstrates how far he is projected to go.
And this is not a surprise. The 17-year-old was one of Liverpool's best young players at academy level last season. He won the Goal of the Season Award for the U18s.
In total, he made 17 goal contributions in 29 matches, which is really good for a young forward playing in a struggling side that finished second from bottom in the U18 Premier League.
Despite Liverpool's poor performances, Sonni-Lambie shone and made his debut for England at youth level, even scoring his first goal for the young Three Lions.
He's clearly a special talent and someone who could be a first team regular in the future.

The next step for him will be U21 football, but perhaps not before being given a chance at first team level in pre-season.
