It’ll be a culture shock to City, too. They’ve won the last four but found themselves nowhere near the champions this time around.

Liverpool have shocked absolutely everyone with their performance under new head coach Arne Slot - and they don’t look like slowing down. In fact, the Reds have big plans in 2025 to build on this success and move forward once again.

So again, it’s a shock to City. They’re now the ones playing catchup and hoping the league leaders falter.

Of course, they’re going to react. They’ve got grand plans of their own, too, as laid out by the Athletic. Here’s what Pep Guardiola and company want to do.

Man City’s grand plans

The big one: City want to bring in four or five players as a reaction to their subpar season. That builds on the ‘four or five players’ they signed back in January for around £200m.

There are two very, very interesting names on their list, too. Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest is a legitimate target but we’l have to see how realistic that one is.

Forest, after all, will be under very little pressure to sell their star player if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Still, City are going to push for Gibbs-White after his brilliant campaign.

Probably their biggest target, though, is Florian Wirtz. Wirtz is one of the world’s standout playmakers and still only 21.

There’s mass interest in him as a result, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich incredibly eager to sign him. Both are major opponents to City here, especially if Xabi Alonso takes over in Spain as expected.

This, then, is the attempt to replace Kevin De Bruyne. City want to hedge their bets, bringing in two playmakers to try and replace arguably their best-ever player.

There’s talk that Ederson could leave the club, too, bringing a new goalkeeper to the forefront of their plans.

But that’s not the most interesting thing about all this. The Athletic reports that City are determined to trim their wage bill from the league’s highest.

De Bruyne leaving helps with that (he’s on Mo Salah wages), while Ederson and Bernardo Silva leaving could also take chunks out of the bill. But it also means signing players on less than the outgoings.

It’s interesting that they think they could do that with Wirtz. Money is essentially the only way they’re going to convince him to ditch Bayern or Real Madrid, after all. Even that might not be enough.

But we’re also a bit surprised that they’d want to trim that budget at a time when they’re actually behind Liverpool. Will we actually see the City rebound everyone is expecting?

Or will they limit themselves for once, allowing Liverpool to steal a true march on them? It promises to be the most interesting summer window in years - that’s all we can say for sure.
