There has been plenty of speculation linking Luis Diaz, the scorer of Liverpool’s first against Spurs, with a move away from Anfield in the summer.

Barcelona and teams from the Saudi Pro League are reportedly interested and the club are open to a sale, as was exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch earlier in the year.

The Colombian is entering the final two years of his deal in Merseyside, and an improved contract could be the only way to keep him happy at Anfield beyond the summer.

Does Diaz deserve improved terms?

The Colombian’s current deal reportedly sees him earn roughly £55,000 per week, making him the 16th highest earner in the team, per Capology.

Diaz has made the second most appearances for Slot’s side this season, also scoring the second most goals in the league.

Contract talks have reportedly already begun between the club and the winger’s representatives, but progress is slow and Diaz’s wage demands could be a sticking point.

According to Colombian outlet Antena2, the 28-year-old is hoping to earn around £140,000 a week, which would put his pay in line with that of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Although both Jota and Nunez could depart this summer, it is clear to see why Diaz wants pay parity with his colleagues.

The Colombian’s output has been significantly better than both Nunez and Jota under Slot, so it isn’t hard to understand why he feels he should be earning just as much.

Will Diaz get his improved contract?

The Colombian’s current deal is set to expire when the winger is 30, so the club may be reluctant to extend his contract far beyond his current terms.

Diaz has managed 16 goals and eight assists this season, his best return for Liverpool to date, and has come into excellent form over the last few weeks.

A big summer rebuild is on the cards at Anfield, and Diaz’s form does make him a very sellable asset – more so than Nunez and Jota – so a departure doesn’t seem too farfetched.

Liverpool will reportedly demand around £70 million for the winger, and if a team is willing to pay that fee then a sale seems almost certain.

If the Reds cannot find a buyer, however, a new deal for Diaz seems appropriate especially if other big earners are sold.

Luis Diaz’s output at Liverpool is undeniable, he does have a lot to offer Slot’s attack and, if he isn’t sold in the summer, a new deal bringing Diaz’s pay in line with his teammates would be well deserved.
