Fenway Sports Group - Liverpool’s owners - plan to establish a multiclub empire.

Unfortunately for the Boston-based organisation they have been unable to do so as yet. We’ve seen reports about Bordeaux in France and Malaga in Spain in the recent past.

Earlier this month talks to buy Getafe - a well-established LaLiga club - reached an unsatisfactory conclusion.

It means that Liverpool are still on the search for a sister club - while rival Premier League teams like Manchester City and Chelsea reap the benefits of the multiclub networks they’ve set up.

Edwards returns to lead multiclub project

Michael Edwards was brought back under the FSG umbrella in 2024 - as part of the group’s post-Jurgen Klopp planning.

The former Liverpool sporting director was given the title of CEO of Football - and has made no secret of the importance of the multiclub project.

Edwards will have been disappointed to see a deal for Getafe slip from FSG’s grasp but plans are on track to buy another club.

FSG chairman Tom Werner spoke to James Pearce of the Athletic for his book - Walk On: Inside Arne Slot’s Liverpool - and discussed Edwards’ return to the fold.

It WILL happen says FSG chair

Having left the club in 2022 it very much seemed like his Liverpool days were done and dusted. But Werner has emphasised the executive’s enthusiasm for the multiclub project - and reiterated his belief that it would soon take off.

“Did he need much persuading? Yes and no,” he said.

“He’s a very talented man, and I’m sure he had a lot of competing offers. But Liverpool is Liverpool.

“Key for Michael was our commitment to purchasing a second club. That’s very much still the plan, but it has to be the right opportunity. We’ve looked at a number of clubs and it just hasn’t been the right fit yet. I do believe eventually that will happen.”

Other teams linked with the multiclub empire in the past have been Toulouse and Vasco da Gama. But right now Liverpool remain without the network connections available to Chelsea and Man City.
