It’s been the most heartbreaking of times for Liverpool Football Club, their fans and the families of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The Liverpool forward lost his life alongside his sibling in a tragic car accident in Spain on July 3. Jota, 28, was driving back to the United Kingdom following his summer break - and had only been married to wife Rute Cardoso a matter of days.

It was supposed to be the happiest time of Diogo’s life - following his wedding with the mother of his three children and a winner of the Premier League as well as the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.

But his life was devastatingly cut short - and everyone involved with the club has struggled to come to terms with the loss.

Liverpool retire Jota's No20

Liverpool have acted with immense dignity - with a delegation first attending Diogo and Andre’s funerals in northern Portugal. Then came the news that the club would be sunsetting Jota’s famous No20 shirt.

Having joined the club in 2020 - and playing his part in title No20 - this was a fitting tribute.

There will now be a memorial sculpture for Jota at Anfield and Liverpool’s players will play with Forever 20 on their shirts and team jackets for the season upcoming.

Fans can honour Jota's legacy

The Liverpool Foundation has also launched a grassroots programme in Jota’s name. Now fans will have the chance to commemorate Jota as the club launch their new 10-year kit deal with Adidas.

“If supporters would like to honour Diogo Jota by having ‘Diogo J. 20’ printed on the back of their shirts in official club stores or via our official online store, as well as adidas in-store or online (where regionally offered), all profits will go to LFC Foundation, the club’s official charity,” a club statement states.

“The Foundation has committed to creating a grassroots football programme in Diogo’s name.”

Every shirt printed with Jota’s name will contribute towards a very worthy cause.

RIP Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
