Liverpool face incredible Man City THREAT for club legend

Liverpool face a real threat from Manchester City to secure the future of a club legend. A massive battle could be coming.

Xabi Alonso is without a club and will almost certainly look to join someone new in the summer. The Spaniard's Real Madrid contract reportedly contained a clause that means he's only paid out for the first year of his three-year deal - something that will surely see him back in the game this summer.

And Liverpool could well be interested. Alonso was one of the names at the top of their shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp in 2024. There's a very good chance, in fact, that he was actually the name at the very top.

The club legend instead chose to wait for the Real Madrid job. That hasn't worked out for him, of course, but his work at Bayer Leverkusen means every club in the world would be happy to hire him.

And that includes Liverpool, who have struggled badly at times in Arne Slot's second season. The Reds endured their worst run of form since the 1950s just a couple of months ago and are firmly out of the title race already.

Swapping head coaches in the summer is a real possibility but they won't be the only ones considering Alonso.

Manchester City will be in the market for someone new shortly. It could be as soon as this summer and we'd argue that Alonso being available might make that more likely.

Pep Guardiola has already publicly said that City must find his successor soon. He's also refused to confirm that he'll still be in charge of them beyond this season.

This really could be the summer that he steps aside - but City would want the perfect successor. And Alonso might be that, given his age, style of play, and incredible success at Leverkusen.

He also knows full well that City are much, much happier with a coach like him than Real Madrid were. Guardiola, after all, is cut from similar cloth.

It's something that puts pressure on Liverpool. Alonso has already talked about wanting to coach in the Premier League and while it sounds as though the Reds would be at the top of his list, they won't be his only option.

And Guardiola deciding to step aside this summer would leave City as an almighty threat. Alonso's availability makes that a more realistic possibility than ever.
