Liverpool dodge bullet as new fee emerges for 20-year-old wonderkid
Liverpool's transfer business made rival fans fairly envious.
The Reds spent over £450 million on trying to improve their ranks with players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak being welcomed through the Anfield doors.
Most people expected Liverpool to be almost unstoppable this season, but, in reality, that's been far from the case.
In fact, for most of the 2025-26 campaign, fans have been demanding that Richard Hughes adds some extra depth to Liverpool's ranks before it's too late.
And, even though players have been linked and the fact that the Reds could really do with some new players being brought in, it still feels like they've managed to dodge a bullet with the transfer of one player.
Rennes want £55.5 million for Liverpool transfer target Jeremy Jacquet
One of the main areas that Liverpool need to reinforce is their centre-backs.
At the moment, they only have three senior options available to them which is why a new centre-back is being demanded.
The arrival of Marc Guehi is now off the table which has meant that several other players, such as Rennes' Jeremy Jacquet have popped up as potential targets.
Most of the players Liverpool are being linked with are youngsters with plenty of potential, but, it seems like, in Rennes' eyes, they value him at a much higher rate than that.
That is, according to a report from journalist Ben Jacobs via his personal X account who shared the following:
"Understand Jeremy Jacquet has informed Rennes he would like to join Chelsea this winter," he wrote.
"As revealed yesterday, Rennes hadn't planned for a January exit, and are hoping for a record sale, surpassing the €64m they sold Jeremy Doku to Manchester City for.
"Club-to-club talks ongoing."
Why Liverpool not signing Jeremy Jacquet for over £55 million is a good thing
Jacquet is an exceptionally talented player.
He's only 20 years old and has quickly become one of Rennes' first names on their team sheet which has resulted in teams such as Liverpool being interested in a transfer.
However, due to his age and his lack of experience outside of Ligue 1, the £55.5 million fee that the French outlet are demanding feels rather extortionate.
Indeed, he would likely be an upgrade on Ibrahima Konate at the moment but, since the Reds already have a youngster in Giovanni Leoni ready and waiting to break into Slot's starting XI upon his return from injury, they need a more experienced defender,
That is, especially if Virgil van Dijk does end up exiting Anfield next summer.
Slot and Hughes also have many other areas among their ranks that could do with upgrading, and, unless they spend their money wisely, they could end up in a worse position than they started.
