Liverpool have taught Newcastle a lesson in this summer transfer window so far.

Fans of the Magpies might feel as if the situation is the other way around, but time has since shown that the Reds have well and truly embarrassed the Tyneside based club. They are in total disarray.

A move for Alexander Isak is seemingly off the cards, although Liverpool's approach for him has not been formally turned down. We've been left to decide for ourselves how things will progress.

But there has been progress with Hugo Ekitike, who was Newcastle's main target for this window. A bid has been sent to Frankfurt for him by the Reds and talks have turned into serious negotiations.

Now, we might see Liverpool attempt to go one further by looking at their replacement target.

Liverpool to boss Newcastle once more?

Since the Magpies stepped back from their interest in Ekitike earlier this week, presumably as a result of Liverpool deciding to enter the race, they have decided to target Brentford's Yohan Wissa.

This was according to David Ornstein at the time, although whether the Bees are still willing to sell the Congo international is still unknown, since Bryan Mbeumo is now set to join Manchester United.

But even if Wissa remains on the market, Newcastle will have to keep their wits about them because according to BBC Sport, Liverpool are interested in him and the Reds might outplay them once again.

Their report said: "Liverpool have also checked in on Brentford's Yohan wise and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins as they work through a range of striker options."

As such, even though it appears as though Liverpool interest in Ekitike is at an advanced stage, we might still see the club pivot to someone else on their shortlist if a better deal is on the table.

If you combine all this together, you get a pretty uncertain situation for Newcastle to be in.

Richard Hughes will be working hard behind the scenes to make sure Liverpool complete the best deal available and that is unlikely to be Wissa if everything is considered. The striker is 28 years old and he will be headed to AFCON this winter to play for his country. And Brentford want £50m for him.

But any agreement with Frankfurt for Ekitike would surely be dropped if they felt confident that Isak was a legitimate possibility, since the Swede is still on 25 years old and he's a far superior player.

With the Frenchman, in comparison, Liverpool would be signing potential rather than a polished product and when the price tags are likely to be over £80m for either of them, the choice is clear.

Nonetheless, the impact this is having on Newcastle's transfer plans is significant and it appears as though the Reds are toying with them at this stage. Who knows, maybe a rivalry will form with them?
