Liverpool 'concern' mooted as two deals could be off

Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of players ahead of the 2026-27 summer transfer window.

Many areas among their squad need upgrading and, without them getting at least five new players in, it's hard to see how they'll improve their ranking.

Of course, Andoni Iraola's tactical changes could help give the club a boost but, if they don't replace some of their below-par first team players, there will be a limit to their performances.

One of the main areas that need upgrading is Liverpool's midfield with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch both being rather underwhelming this term.

So, with this in mind, it's hardly surprising to see most of the players being linked with an Anfield switch are midfielders.

Liverpool are concerned about how much they'd need to spend on Adam Wharton or Alex Scott

During Arne Slot's first season in charge of Liverpool, Mac Allister and Gravenberch were too of his best players.

The duo formed a dynamic trio with Dominik Szoboszlai and helped lead the Reds to their Premier League title win.

But, during the 2025-26 campaign, things just haven't clicked which is why Alex Scott and Adam Wharton have both been linked with transfers.

However, with Manchester City bidding over £100 million for Elliott Anderson, it's clear that the market for English youngsters is rather bloated and expensive.

And, as per an update from TEAMtalk, this is one of the many things that Liverpool are concerned about this summer regarding deals for Wharton and Scott.

"Liverpool are continuing to assess their midfield options this summer, but TEAMtalk understands growing concern over escalating Premier League transfer fees could complicate their plans to land two top targets in Adam Wharton and Alex Scott," they wrote.

"Sporting director Richard Hughes has been working extensively on a number of domestic targets, with Crystal Palace midfielder Wharton and Bournemouth star Scott among the names under consideration as Liverpool look to strengthen the squad for new head coach Andoni Iraola.

"However, Liverpool are becoming increasingly aware of the inflation affecting the Premier League market, particularly following Manchester City’s move for Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson.

"Sources have informed us that Anderson’s proposed switch to the Etihad is expected to command a British-record fee in excess of £120million, a figure that is already having a knock-on effect across the market.

"Liverpool currently value Wharton at around the £60million mark, while Scott is viewed at a similar level. Yet both clubs are expected to hold out for significantly higher fees given recent developments.

"Sources indicate that Palace are closely monitoring the Anderson situation and its wider impact on player valuations."

Liverpool must figure out their priorities for the summer

With how many changes Liverpool need to make this summer, it's clear that Richard Hughes and Iraola need to figure out their list of priorities.

And, since Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate have all already exited, it's clear that change is on the way.

But, since the Reds are a sell-to-buy club, they only have a certain amount of resources they can sacrifice to fund new arrivals.

Players such as Mac Allister are expected to leave this summer and, if he has a decent World Cup campaign, he could add an extra few million to his value.

This would obviously help the Reds out but, they'll need more than one major player sale to earn enough to fun a full window, especially in this day and age.
