It promises to be a frantic summer with plenty of incomings and outgoings to come.

Hughes’ main objective now will fall on trying to sort out the future of Liverpool’s attack.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz all have uncertain futures at the club. Nunez is probably the most likely to leave the club for pastures new, but it’s entirely possible that all three of them could leave.

The reality is that Liverpool want to reshape the structure of their attack. Arne Slot needs a new no.9 and for that Hughes will have to dip into the market again.

But it’s a difficult market right now. Everyone wants to sign a forward and quality forwards are scarce.

There is one player though who might just tick all the boxes for Liverpool. And it looks like Liverpool are now closing in on him.

EXCLUSIVE: Wonderkid will join Liverpool first team in pre-season

For months now it seemed like Chelsea were leading the race to sign Hugo Ekitike. But now that seems to have changed.

Chelsea have signed Liam Delap and their interest in Ekitike seems to have cooled. According to Ben Jacobs speaking on the Kings of the Bridge channel on Playback Liverpool are leading the race for the Frenchman.

“Chelsea do hold an interest in Hugo Ekitike but think it’s Liverpool who are really there, Chelsea were never as advanced as people said,” Jacobs said.

This sounds really promising for Liverpool. It feels like the Reds are closing in on their man.

And what a man he could be. Ekitike is the perfect modern day forward for Liverpool, he pretty much ticks every box in terms of what Arne Slot will want from his no.9.

Last season for Frankfurt, he proved he can lead the line stupendously. Scoring and creating chances in the process.

With his tall and towering gait and his exquisite technical ability combined with his speed, Ekitike has all the tools to succeed in the Premier League.

He’s still a really young player and with the potential that he has, he’s absolutely the Reds’ dream choice in a difficult market at the moment.

With Chelsea slipping behind, this feels like the Wirtz saga with Manchester City and Bayern Munich again, and that ended up being a brilliant resolution for Liverpool with the German choosing the Reds.

Hopefully, that will be the case with Ekitike as well. For now it's definitely one to keep a close eye on.

I'd be shocked if Liverpool are interested. He's had one good season. He's very clumsy. Sesko is far superior and has been doing it for 4 or 5 years.
