The higher-ups at Liverpool expect one certain outcome from their Florian Wirtz pursuit. Here’s what they’re thinking.

Liverpool are in the race for Florian Wirtz, believe it or not. The German is one of the most exciting talents on the planet and the Reds have a feeling they could get him.

There’s only one other rival: Bayern Munich. Manchester City dropped out of the race on Monday, believing the total cost would be too much.

But Bayern are a significant rival. They practically have first say on elite German talents, of which Wirtz is one of the best for some time.

Bayer Leverkusen, however, don’t want to sell to Bayern. No German teams like to do that. They’d be massively strengthening a rival at a time when they feel relatively close to them.

Wirtz’s contract, however, expires in 2027 and Leverkusen must sell this summer if they’re to get a ‘full’ price for him. His valuation will reduce in 2026 with only one year left on his deal and then evaporate with the end of his contract the year after that.

There are real doubts over Bayern’s ability to meet the €150m asking price, though. Liverpool have no such concerns and Fabrizio Romano believes they’re willing to wait as long as this one takes.

Liverpool bosses have their say

The Liverpool Echo has given their own report on the Wirtz race where they explain the feelings of Liverpool ‘chiefs’. Though, it’s a line that suggests no one should get their hopes up.

The claim is that those bosses expect one outcome this summer: Wirtz remains in Germany. Now, it’s not said whether that’s to Bayern or with another year at Leverkusen.

But the suggestion is that Wirtz wants to join Bayern and Liverpool expect him to. A year in Leverkusen, after all, is simply a way of easing a move to Bavaria.

Liverpool will continue to push for this one, though. They’ll put all the money they can on the table in an effort to persuade Wirtz, who will give up quite a lot of it if he decides to spend another year at Leverkusen.

Liverpool will also feel they can offer the playmaker an elite role and a massive profile, of course. In fact, we imagine they’re telling him he can be the post-Mo Salah star of the side.

And perhaps that’s enough to sway him. Certainly, it’s enough to get him interested and engaged in talks.

We’ll see if that translates to an actual transfer. Liverpool have some sort of hope here, even if they lack expectation.
