Liverpool bet big on Arne Slot being completely wrong

Liverpool bet big on a football trend in the summer. Now they’re hoping Arne Slot is wrong.

Arne Slot was asked in his press conference on Monday about his take on current Premier League football. It doesn't exactly sound like he enjoys it.

The Liverpool boss talked about enjoying other leagues and how an abundance of money has changed how the league operates. Teams are all incredibly rich, and that has led to this current war of attrition in the Premier League.

Games are wildly physical, with little room for creativity. The team that tops the league, after all, relies overwhelmingly on set-pieces and doesn't really create much through their forwards.

"We're not going to change it," Slot said. "Maybe in five or ten years, things will change again."

Liverpool will really hope he's wrong about that. The change has to happen sooner.

Situation Summary: Arne Slot

Contract and position at Liverpool

Arne Slot was appointed Liverpool head coach in 2024 on an initial three‑year deal to 2027 and won the Premier League in his first season in charge. Liverpool opened talks over an extension after that title win, but he has recently declined to give updates on negotiations amid scrutiny over results. He remains in post and is expected to see out at least this season, with ownership weighing his early success against the current downturn.

2025/26 season and performance

The 2025‑26 campaign has been difficult: Liverpool’s league form has slumped, including a run of six defeats in seven games and a poor home loss to Nottingham Forest, leaving them well off the title pace. Across the 2025 calendar year their win rate dipped to around 51 percent at one stage, fuelling talk of a “crisis” and questions over whether Slot’s methods are working in his second full season. Slot has publicly described the year as “a constant battle” and pointed to injuries and cohesion issues, but fans and pundits have demanded significant changes.

Future outlook

Despite the pressure, reports suggest Liverpool are reluctant to make a short‑term decision on a coach who delivered the title only a year earlier, and there is no firm indication of an imminent sacking. Internal evaluations by the sporting leadership focus on whether Slot can reset the team with tactical adjustments and targeted recruitment ahead of 2026‑27, with speculative pieces already discussing how a “dream XI” under him could look next season. His situation is widely framed as precarious but still recoverable if results and performances improve over the remainder of this campaign.

Analysis

Liverpool spent enormously in 2025 and did so on the idea that a shift towards technical, creative football was on the way. That’s according to The Times.

'“We’ve gone technical and quick when others have gone big and strong,” a source said.

'The long view is the style shift is temporary and we’ll revert to the pattern that football has followed over the past two decades, away from directness and towards a skills-and-possession game. Liverpool’s rebuild will prove prescient if that’s the case. If not, they will reassess.'

Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez - even Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak are more technical players, despite their size. Liverpool absolutely went big and bet heavily on the idea that technical players will rule the game.

Slot, however, feels the current style may last for over five years. Given Liverpool’s investment, they absolutely cannot afford that to be the case.

They need their head coach to be wrong about that one. The technical re-revolution must happen fast, preferably at Anfield.
