Liverpool will FINALLY sign superstar after nine years

Michael Edwards could finally pull off a transfer he's been working on for nine years at Liverpool.

For now though, Edwards is very much focused on Liverpool alongside Richard Hughes. Their mission this summer has been to rebuild Liverpool and they've done exactly that.

Liverpool have become a better team with the new arrivals bringing in a fresh energy that will rejuvenate Slot's squad and evolve the team to be able to make them compete not just for the Premier League title but the Champions League.

The likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have already arrived.

But more are set to walk through the doors at Anfield, including a player Edwards has sought for close to nine years.

Alexander Isak is the prime candidate for the no.9 role at Liverpool.

He is the dream target for Liverpool and it's no surprise given Edwards had tried to sign him all the way back in 2016.

Back then, Isak was on Liverpool's radar as per Sport and he was dubbed as the new Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Edwards was looking to reinforce the club's options with fresh young talent and Isak seemed like the most exciting young forward in European football at the time.

Liverpool even held a secret meeting with Isak's representatives in order to persuade him to join the club.

He'd bust onto the scene as a 16-year-old playing in Sweden's top flight for AIK and became a goal-scoring machine.

Isak's numbers were brilliant at the time. As a teenager he averaged 0.62 goals per 90, and overperformed his xG by 0.19 per 90, which is roughly how much he overperformed his xG last season in the Premier League - highlighting that he's always been a superior finisher.

At the same time, he was a fluid striker for AIK, averaging close to five dribble attempts per 90 minutes and making 1.13 progressive runs as well as 1.23 shot assists proving he could link up with his teammates, too.

Based on the data, it made sense for Liverpool to pursue him. Even back then it was obvious he was the full package. But at the time, Borussia Dortmund won the race for Isak's signature.

The German side then subsequently never gave him a chance to spread his wings.

It took Isak several years to get back to the level he had promised during his AIK years but he's now even better than the potential he exhibited averaging 0.73 goals per 90 for Newcastle last season, and it's no surprise Edwards' newly led data team are pushing for his signature.

They pushed to sign him even when he wasn't having a great output at Real Sociedad in 2022, but back then Darwin Nunez was favoured by other members of the recruitment team.

By all accounts, despite the high transfer fee, it looks like Liverpool will be able to get the deal done.

Isak has made it clear he wants the move to Anfield.

And now with David Ornstein's latest revelation in The Athletic that Isak has informed Newcastle that he doesn't want to play for them again, it's becoming quite clear that there is no way back for the Swede.

Newcastle have to let him go, and they will in the end. Isak will end up at Liverpool by the end of the summer and Edwards will finally get his man after a nine year pursuit.

Ultimately Liverpool get a superstar in the making, and an incredible forward who will make Slot's side invincible.
