Liverpool can't MISS deal for Arne Slot and Richard Hughes favourite
Liverpool’s centre-back options are going to require a shakeup either this January or else in the summer transfer window.
Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the season and if no new deal is agreed then the Frenchman will be leaving on a free transfer.
And then there’s Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to consider. Those two are out of contract in 2027 and it would be surprising to see either remain at Anfield beyond then.
It’s clear Liverpool are making plans for the future at centre-back in the shape of this January’s signings. We’ve seen deals completed for Mor Talla Ndiaye and Noah Adekoya while the transfer of Ifeanyi Ndukwe is also expected to be completed.
But the Premier League champions need players for the here and now.
Marcos Senesi is leaving Bournemouth
That means signing experienced, Premier League-proven campaigners. While attention has been focused on Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace captain who came so close to joining over the summer, there is another potential transfer target hiding in plain sight.
Richard Hughes oversaw the signing of Marcos Senesi for Bournemouth back in 2022. The Argentina international had just helped Arne Slot’s Feyenoord to the UEFA Conference League final - with the Cherries securing his signature for only £12.6m.
Since then the left-footer has established himself as one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League and looks destined for a big move this summer.
Senesi well-known to Arne Slot and Richard Hughes
Now 28, Senesi’s contract at the Vitality Stadium is about to expire - alerting clubs such as Napoli and Juventus to his potential availability.
But if Liverpool were smart they would swoop in for Senesi right now - heading off a summer clamour for his signature.
Senesi suffered an indifferent season in 2024/25 - with a significant hamstring injury opening the door to Dean Huijsen. However he is now back to his consistent best - even if Bournemouth’s results haven’t always been great this term under Andoni Iraola.
He is back in the international picture too - winning his latest cap against Venezuela back in October.
