Joe Gomez likely to STAY after awful Liverpool injury
Joe Gomez looks far more likely to stay after a terrible injury to one of his Liverpool teammates. The defender had been heading for the exit door.
Joe Gomez very nearly left Liverpool in the summer after a decade at the club. In fact, only Crystal Palace deciding to keep Marc Guehi truly put an end to it.
AC Milan had a deal lined up for Gomez and were eager to grab him. Liverpool would only sell if Guehi arrived - but both deals collapsed at the last minute.
There was talk of the player leaving in January but once the club opted not to sign a new centre-back, that was never going to happen. So what about the summer?
Well, Gomez is certainly one of those who could leave but that not looks a lot less likely.
The Conor Bradley problem
There’s a good chance now that Liverpool don’t welcome Conor Bradley back to the first-team setup until 2027. His knee injury is a bad one and, as outlined brilliantly by sport scientist Simon Brundish, typically takes around 12 months to rehabilitate.
That’s a real problem for Liverpool, who thought they’d nailed down their right-back options in the summer. Jeremie Frimpong arrived to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in the squad and that should have been that.
Only, Frimpong has battled his own injuries and Bradley will be gone for a long time. Can Liverpool actually afford to go into next season with just those two?
It brings Gomez back into focus. Of course, he’s had his own injury issues, including this season, but his ability to cover both right-back and centre-back as a homegrown player might make him invaluable.
Liverpool are likely to go through a change at centre-back anyway, with Jeremy Jacquet arriving and Ibrahima Konate potentially departing. Keeping Gomez’s experience around for stability may be the best way to cover issues at both positions.
Buying someone to solely play right-back isn’t really an option - Bradley will return, after all. Buying a centre-back who can also play there makes some sense, but keeping Gomez at that point seems more sensible.
