Perhaps one of the biggest deals of the day, which has come out of nowhere, is that of Joe Gomez.

The England international is Liverpool's longest serving player. He's been at the club for a decade. He's experienced the lows of Brendan Rodgers, the heights of Jurgen Klopp and the spectacular start of Arne Slot's reign.

During his time at the club, Gomez has always been a loyal servant. He's had opportunities to leave in the past but he's always remained.

And when he was on the pitch, he's always delivered as well.

We will never forget his performances during the 2019/20 campaign when he was probably one of the club's best players in their charge for the Premier League title.

Unfortunately, the only thing that has thwarted Gomez has been injuries. He's never been consistent enough when it comes to his fitness and now at 28-years-old, with Liverpool having invested in Giovanni Leoni and likely going for Marc Guehi as well, it feels like the right time to leave the club.

Liverpool won't want to lose Gomez but he will have aspirations of playing in the World Cup next year and he will be aware his playing time will be limited at Anfield.

So it makes sense that with AC Milan have registered their interest in him, Gomez has made it clear he would like to join the Serie A side.

Anfield Watch understands Gomez had agreed a four year contract with the Italian giants. We also understand that AC Milan were going to match his Liverpool salary and pay him a mega €150k per week.

A four-year contract on those terms with the opportunity to join a prestigious club, it's no wonder Gomez was keen on this transfer.

It would be a mega move for the Liverpool defender.

But ultimately the deal fell through. Why? Well, there was a hold-up on Liverpool's side. They didn't want to sanction a move for Gomez until they were certain Marc Guehi was coming to Anfield.

AC Milan on the other hand were running out of time. They had to complete the medical before the Italian deadline at 19:00 and they wanted to do a six-hour medical for the Liverpool defender since you cannot do a deal 'pending a medical' in Italy.

Considering logistics, it was just impossible for Milan to complete this deal. That is why a move is 100% off for Joe Gomez to AC Milan.

Whether he could move elsewhere remains to be seen.
