A brilliant attacker is coming back to Liverpool at last.

Liverpool's attacking department looks far less secure than it did this time last year.

The long-term injury suffered by Hugo Ekitike has dramatically altered the landscape at Anfield, leaving Andoni Iraola facing a significant challenge as he prepares for his first campaign at the club.

Ekitike's ruptured Achilles tendon is expected to keep him sidelined for an extended period with the Frenchman returning at the very earliest in January of next year, thus depriving Liverpool of one of their most dangerous attacking outlets and a player who had become increasingly influential in the final third.

With Ekitike unavailable, much of the responsibility now falls on Alexander Isak.

While there is no doubting the Swede's quality when fit, his injury record remains a concern. Isak has already endured lengthy spells on the sidelines during his Liverpool career and has required careful management upon his returns. Throughout his career he has often faced niggles and now he's off playing at the World Cup, who knows in what condition he will return to Liverpool.

That reality makes Liverpool's situation increasingly precarious. Isak possesses the ability to lead the line at the highest level, but relying on him as the undisputed focal point of the attack carries obvious risks.

Should fitness issues resurface, Liverpool could find themselves desperately short of proven goalscorers at a crucial stage of the season.

The uncertainty surrounding Federico Chiesa only adds to the problem. The Italian international continues to face questions regarding his long-term future at Anfield, and a departure would further reduce Liverpool's attacking depth.

Losing both Ekitike through injury and Chiesa through a potential transfer would leave Iraola with remarkably few senior options capable of making a consistent impact in the final third.

Alternatively, Iraola could look internally and accelerate the development of academy prospects, offering opportunities to young players who may otherwise have remained on the fringes of the first team.

There's Jayden Danns, Will Wright and Josh Sonni-Lambie, but are they really ready? They have very little, if none at all, experience at senior level.

As a result, Liverpool may have little choice but to explore the transfer market. Bringing in another forward would help reduce the burden on Isak while providing competition and cover across multiple attacking positions.

But there is another solution here - a potential gamble that could have the biggest pay off.

Relying on Alexander Isak, and actually having faith in his ability to justify his enormous price tag.

The chances are Liverpool are going to trust him and there's good news in that regard. The Isak we've seen at Anfield over the last 12 months wasn't the real Isak.

It was an unfit and not quite ready Isak, constantly being rushed to return too early. However, what we've seen of him so far the World Cup is a completely different beast.

Isak was absolutely tremendous for Sweden against Tunisia. He scored, registered two assists, and was simply everywhere. Running with the ball at speed and looking like the Isak Liverpool paid all that money for.

It's been a long time coming, but finally it looks like he is back.

And that means Iraola and co. can actually start to be excited because in the form of Isak a sensational forward will finally be coming to Anfield once the World Cup is over.

The sensational forward we've all been waiting for.
