International forward is coming BACK to Liverpool

Liverpool took the decision to loan out several fringe and young talents in last summer’s transfer window.

We saw the likes of Luca Stephenson, Harvey Elliott and James McConnell shipped out for the season - albeit with varying degrees of success so far.

Indeed McConnell is on his way back to base following a poor spell at Ajax while there is a discussion live around the future of Elliott too.

Another player currently out on loan and struggling to make an impact is Lewis Koumas.

Lewis Koumas struggling at Birmingham

The 20-year-old enjoyed a productive spell at Stoke in 2024/25 - playing almost 50 times - and Birmingham City was chosen as his destination this term.

There the Welshman was expected to continue his development but right now it doesn’t appear to be working out. While the Wales international has been a regular in the matchday squad he has made only four league starts in the Championship.

Indeed manager Chris Davies admitted last month that a decision would have to be taken in both Koumas' and Liverpool's interests when the window opened.

Birmingham’s latest outing was a 3-0 trouncing at Watford on New Year’s Day - with former Liverpool forward Tom Ince claiming a hat-trick.

Koumas deal has got a recall clause

Koumas was again on the bench - only playing the closing stages - with it now reckoned that he too will be on his way back to Anfield this January.

“A recall clause was included in the agreement and Liverpool will be weighing up whether Koumas would be better off elsewhere, given the lack of game time,” a report in the Athletic reads.

Koumas has already played and scored for Liverpool’s first team - emerging as a versatile forward option from the Reds’ academy.

He was on the bench for the 2024 EFL Cup final win over Chelsea when Jurgen Klopp was still in charge. And his maiden Liverpool appearance came in that same year - during an FA Cup win over Southampton.

First-team football will do the winger well if he can find it - and we wait to see what decision Richard Hughes takes over the coming weeks.
