Injury misfortune costs Liverpool their next star signing
Liverpool can blame random injury luck for missing out on their next star signing. Real misfortune for the Reds.
Liverpool did all they could to sign Marc Guehi in the summer. Well, nearly all - it's safe to say that making their big move a little earlier would have secured the defender.
But then, perhaps the price would have been far higher. Liverpool waited until the very end of the window to strike a deal with Crystal Palace and Guehi, getting virtually everything wrapped up.
Palace, however, pulled the plug at the last minute. They couldn't afford to lose their captain without a replacement and there wasn't really any time to sign one.
That's fair enough, but it left Liverpool with work to do in 2026. Would they pay money to get him in January? Or wait for the free transfer in the summer?
Injuries cost Liverpool Marc Guehi transfer
It seems that Liverpool were willing to simply wait things out to sign Guehi in the summer. There wasn't really any major talk about a January move for the player - the free transfer was the goal.
And it seems that Manchester City felt the same way. Or at least, they did until injuries struck. The Athletic reports that 'injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias saw their pursuit of the 25-year-old brought forward'.
It's prompted a massive contract offer that Liverpool weren't going to contend with. Guehi will now head to City, leaving the Reds having to find another option.
It really does appear to have come down to those injuries, too. Liverpool have been hit hard with issues for their own players this season but it seems even injuries elsewhere are costing them.
A real blow, this one, as Guehi looked ideally-placed for what the team needed going forward. Hopefully, the club have an ideal backup option in mind.
