How Liverpool are feeling about Julian Nagelsmann replacing Arne Slot
Liverpool are reeling from a sequence of six defeats in seven Premier League matches.
The latest reverse came last weekend at home against lowly Nottingham Forest. Although the Reds are defending Premier League champions they are currently languishing in 12th place.
It’s a far cry from the summer - when the Reds added £450m worth of talent to the squad and looked a sure bet for a second successive top-flight title.
Coach Arne Slot could do no wrong in his first season in charge - expertly guiding his side to the summit. But recent events have led to speculation that FSG may seek to replace Slot as head coach.
Nagelsmann mentioned as potential Arne Slot successor
One of the names in the frame has been Julian Nagelsmann. He is currently the head coach of Germany - preparing his side for the FIFA World Cup in North America next summer.
Reports in Germany suggested that Nagelsmann had been targetted by Liverpool with a view to him succeeding Slot. And in turn that would open the opportunity to take over from Nagelsmann in the German hotseat.
However Merseyside reporter Dominic King has now poured cold water on those claims - declaring that the Reds’ hierarchy have got no intention of replacing Slot right now.
Nagelsmann talk is NONSENSE says insider
“Talk about Julian Nagelsmann being a contender to replace Slot: nonsense,” King wrote on X.
“He wasn’t a candidate to replace Klopp and Liverpool aren’t looking to change their head coach.”
Arne Slot was tempted to Anfield by sporting director Richard Hughes - who secured the Dutchman to a contract until 2027. Even if the club currently do not plan to replace him there is no doubt that the situation will have to improve and fast.
Liverpool's form must pick up
Liverpool are on course for a very poor season and have a lot of work ahead of them even to re-qualify for the Champions League. Slot needs to find a formula to get the best out of his new signings - including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
Other stars from the title win - including Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Alexis Mac Allister - also need to step up to the plate. Otherwise it could be curtains for Liverpool’s head coach - no matter what Hughes and FSG are currently planning.
