How Arne Slot predicted Liverpool's EMBARRASSING loss to PSV
Liverpool have become predictable - not just how weak the defensive setup is, or how blunt the attack is, but in terms of the results the fans expect from the team's performances every week.
Initially, you could point to the new signings requiring time to adjust to their new surroundings, and the late goals helped the Reds to navigate through that period with seven wins to start the season.
But just three wins have come since September 23 and different narratives have come into play. The more senior and experienced players are making individual errors, which can sure cost you when it comes to the fine margins in a game, but there's an overriding feeling that it's much worse than that.
Arne Slot made a comment in the media prior to Liverpool's 4-1 loss to PSV on Wednesday night - the Reds' ninth loss in 12 games, and it's now clearer than ever that the Dutchman's job is at risk.
Slot looks out of his depth
In an interview with TNT Sports prior to the Champions League clash, Arne Slot said: "I'm also, like so many others, almost confused. Like, how is this possible [Liverpool's form] with so much quality available, that I cannot find a way of winning with my team. [It] is also not completely true, because people could also say we've won two out of the last four... it's clear we've lost far too many games."
The quite-frankly embarrassing performance against PSV only compounded Slot, the players and the fans' sorrows, and his confusion around Liverpool's form is incredibly concerning given the context.
Of course, it's clear that Liverpool are capable of more, looking at the performance level that we were capable of delivering against Real Madrid, and several players are under-delivering. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Milos Kerkez, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, and so many others are miles off the levels they delivered last season, for each of their respective clubs.
But that collection of individuals, now in Slot's squad, can't just work together. It's abundantly clear that it's not that straightforward. And yet, the head coach is openly discussing in the media how hard he's finding it to figure it all out. Is the task laid before him too big? Is he actually up to the challenge?
The Premier League title win was a spectacular achievement, and it's not fair to say that it was Jurgen Klopp's team, because Slot was a fundamental part of Liverpool's reinvention to win it.
But this is when the Dutchman really earns his money. Battling adversity is never easy, but it's a fundamental part of football. Nothing ever goes your way all the time, although it certainly appears as though everything can go wrong on a far more regular basis. As they say, when it rains, it pours.
Slot's lack of clarity about how to turn things around, is why Liverpool fans are currently riddled with anxiety when it comes to watching and supporting the team. Old wounds are constantly being exposed by different teams each week. Sadly, losing to PSV was entirely predictable eventuality.
And the problem with Slot's honesty is that it's likely to contribute to his own demise. The £450m spent in the transfer window speaks for itself, but the quality within the squad isn't being utilised properly and the longer that goes on for, the clearer it becomes that change might be necessary.
