Fulham performance confirms Liverpool star's fate is sealed

Liverpool are expected to be active in the transfer market this January, but that could mean departures as well as signings.

A few players have found themselves stuck on the periphery of Arne Slot’s side this season, none more so than Federico Chiesa.

Unlike teammate like Wataru Endo, who has faced time out injured, Chiesa has been almost always available for the Reds this campaign and still isn’t trusted by Slot.

The Italian has shown bright flashes of his talent at times, but often his cameos are too short for him to make a proper impact.

Chiesa’s future has been the topic of much speculation heading into the January window, but his cameo against Fulham on Sunday may have sealed his fate.

Fulham cameo decides Chiesa’s future

Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham on Sunday was an overall disappointing display, summed up by Chiesa’s late appearance.

Despite being on the pitch for just over 10 minutes, Chiesa only touched the ball once and failed to have any impact at all on the match.

It has been reported several times that Slot still doesn’t trust Chiesa to step up and take on a bigger role in the squad, owing in part to a disastrous performance against Plymouth in the FA Cup last season.

The 28-year-old has come in clutch for Liverpool a few times this season, but his meaningless cameos outnumber his impressive ones.

Will Liverpool move on from Chiesa?

It feels as though Chiesa will never fully earn the trust of his head coach and, with a number of teams reportedly interested, a January departure could be on the cards.

With the World Cup due to be played this summer, Chiesa will also likely be keen to get consistent minutes in order to guarantee a call up to the Italy national team.

A loan move feels like the most likely outcome this month, but a permeant move could also be on the cards and Liverpool should be able to easily recoup the ÂŁ12.5 million they spent on the Italian 18 months ago.

Although the Reds won’t be looking to actively lose players from an injury ridden squad, Chiesa’s disappointing performance against Fulham could well be the catalyst that finally sees him leave Anfield.
