Fabrizio Romano confirms Richard Hughes' stance ahead of summer transfer window
Plenty has changed at Anfield in the past two years, and more change could be on the way.
Liverpool’s legendary manager Jurgen Klopp left the club at the of the 2023/24 season and the Reds’ staff has changed considerably since then.
Michael Edwards and Julian Ward have both returned to the club in executive roles for owners FSG, and Richard Hughes now heads the recruitment department at Anfield.
Arne Slot is the main man in the dugout too, although the Dutchman has faced heavy criticism this season owing to poor performances and results.
Big changes behind the scenes have been touted recently, and now some clarity has been given on the situation.
Richard Hughes stance confirmed
Over the past few months links between Hughes and Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal have become a regular occurrence.
Reports from Saudi Arabia have at times even suggested that a deal is done for Hughes to make the move at the end of the season, but they haven’t yet been corroborated by the English media.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that despite the interest from Saudi Arabia Hughes remains focussed on Liverpool and is leading the recruitment process heading into the summer.
The Reds’ summer plans are starting to take shape, and work will no doubt already be underway to bring players to Anfield.
Hughes led the Reds’ recruitment team in a historic summer off the back of winning the Premier League, breaking the British transfer record twice in one window.
Expecting a summer on the same scale this year is unrealistic, but several big signings are needed at Liverpool, and Hughes and Co will have been laying the foundations for the summer window for months.
Liverpool have been through a number of sporting directors in recent years, with Edwards and Ward both holding the role as well as Jorg Schmadtke and losing Hughes to Al Hilal would mark the fourth change in the role in the last five years.
Supporters will be relieved to hear that Hughes is fully focussed on his role at Liverpool despite Saudi interest and will hope that the summer window is a productive one at Anfield.
