England international hints that he wants to emulate Liverpool legend

Liverpool had it rough last season.

Arne Slot failed to defend the Premier League title with his team finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Indeed, a lot of this was down to the poor performances of their first-team squad but, in the end, Liverpool's poor performances cost the Dutchman his job.

This led to Andoni Iraola being appointed and caused fans to start speculating about what deals he could make to improve the Reds' ranks.

And, while over £150 million was spent on new players, more change is still needed.

Obviously, the January window is still a few months away yet so, no new players can be welcomed through the Anfield doors but, since there are definitely areas that could do with upgrading, change is afoot.

Alex Scott said that Steven Gerrard was England's best midfielder

Four players may have been brought in by Iraola and Richard Hughes over the summer but, when looking at all the players they were linked with, there must have been at least 30 different players who were rumoured to be of interest to Liverpool.

A lot of them were central midfielders and, even though everyone can clearly tell that new ones are needed at Anfield, their recruitment team decided against bringing anyone in.

Obviously, deadline day brought up the chances of a potential move for Lamine Camara in January but, another one of the long-linked players with Liverpool was Alex Scott.

The Englishman has really come into his own over the last year or so at Bournemouth and, since Iraola became the manager of Liverpool, the links made sense.

Especially since he already full understands what the Spaniard expects of him in his system.

With all of this in mind, the fact that the midfielder chose Steven Gerrard as England's best midfielder out of five options proves that he thinks highly of his fellow countryman.

And, it could even hint at him wanting to emulate the Liverpool legend and become a regular starter at Anfield.

While speaking to Bournemouth's social media team, Scott was asked to blind rank five England midfielders from best to worst.

The five players were Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

Of all the options, Gerrard came out on top which proves the impact he had during his time at Liverpool.

And, while this isn't a direct admission from Scott that he'd like to join, it certainly feels like he has a bit of an affinity with the club and could want to emulate Gerrard in the future.

One of the main issues that Liverpool have had to deal with so far this season is the poor performances of their midfield.

Iraola initially started off by having Dominik Szobsozlai and Ryan Gravenberch as his double pivot.

However, since neither of them had played in that role before, they were atrocious with both players pushing forward way too much.

From the start of the season, that still hasn't really improved with Gravenberch now being dropped for Alexis Mac Allister despite the bumper new deal he was handed last term.

This lack of form has caused fans to demand that a new central midfielder is brought in and, of all the options presented to Liverpool, Scott feels like the best one for the Reds to pursue.

Not only does he already understand what Iraola wants from his number sixes but, he's also homegrown and is still only 23 years old.

So, even though he's already a fairly special player, the fact that he could grow to become an even better one is exciting.

Indeed, his price tag will be extortionate with the Cherries demanding around £100 million during the summer but, if Liverpool can negotiate them down a bit and agree on a deal, Scott could end up being one of their most important signings yet.
