Liverpool look ready to move on from a player after just one appearance. A brutal decision.

Giovanni Leoni signed for Liverpool as the next big thing back last year. A proper wonderkid at centre-back who could make waves in his debut season.

Unfortunately, the Italian was dealt an incredibly bad hand as his knee blew out on his debut. Leoni was immediately ruled out for the rest of the season and we may not see him again until quite late this year.

And we might not see him in a Liverpool shirt again, ridiculously. The club have already signed a new next-big-thing in Jeremy Jacquet (also injury - shoulder surgery), and report suggest they’re still looking at young centre-backs.

Africa Foot, for instance, claim Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal is a target and that Liverpool are the most advanced towards a move out of several English clubs. He’s a teammate of Jacquet’s at Rennes and another potential star.

Couple that with consistent reports in Italy, such as from L’Interista, that Inter feel there’s a real chance to sign Leoni permanently this summer and it does feel as though Liverpool are already moving on from the Italian. That would be an incredibly brutal decision - but perhaps not a shocking one at the elite level.

We hope Leoni is given every chance to recover and become a star for Liverpool. Whether he gets that chance, however, is unclear right now.

Giovanni Leoni: Situation Summary

Recovery Milestone and Technical Appreciation

As of 17 April 2026, Giovanni Leoni has achieved a significant milestone in his rehabilitation by returning to grass-based training at the AXA Training Centre. The 19-year-old Italian, who joined from Parma for £26 million in August 2025, has been sidelined since 23 September 2025, when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) just 81 minutes into his debut against Southampton. Despite the briefness of his appearance, club staff were reportedly "blown away" by his composure and technical proficiency, which saw him complete 94% of his passes and win all his aerial duels before the injury occurred. His inclusion in the 25-man shortlist for the 2025 Golden Boy award shortly after his injury further underscores the high regard in which he is held across Europe.

Internal Stance and Rebuilding Plans

Liverpool’s hierarchy, spearheaded by Richard Hughes, have firmly rebuffed recent enquiries from Inter Milan, who are reportedly keen on bringing the Rome-born defender back to Serie A on an initial loan deal. Inter manager Cristian Chivu remains a vocal admirer of Leoni, having mentored him at Parma, but Liverpool view the teenager as an "untouchable" part of their defensive succession plan. With the club bracing for the departure of several senior figures this summer, including vice-captain Andy Robertson, the medical team is working toward a "zero-risk" integration plan that will see Leoni fully fit for the 2026–2027 pre-season tour. For now, Leoni remains a regular presence at Anfield on matchdays, frequently seen in the directors' box as he continues his journey back to first-team football.
