Alexander Isak mess likely forces Liverpool to abandon transfer

Liverpool are likely to abandon transfer plans after the mess surrounding Alexander Isak. The Reds feel a bit burned.

Liverpool's 2025 transfer plans didn't really work out as they'd hoped. The players are undeniably brilliant but in terms of gelling an elite team together? The jury is well and truly out.

The massive summer spend was supposed to improve on a title-winning group. That hasn't happened, with every signing except Hugo Ekitike struggle to some regard.

And that's tough to take after dropping well over £400m on new players. The Reds twice broke their transfer record in an effort to move up a level but it's clear to all that they've moved backwards.

The entire affair around Alexander Isak may have another effect, too. Liverpool are set to be a lot more cautious around new signings.

The Alexander Isak impact

Football Insider reports that Liverpool may abandon a move for Anthony Gordon because of the difficulties around Isak. The Reds' record transfer has had an incredibly difficult start to life at Anfield.

First, there was the massive delay in actually signing him. That delay saw Isak go on strike at Newcastle United, eliminating his pre-season. It wasn't until the very end of the transfer window that he signed.

And so Isak arrived unfit. It took months for him to get up to speed - a time period in which Liverpool struggled badly. He wasn't actually near fitness for very long before a leg break took him out long-term.

That record fee has delivered two goals from six Premier League starts, 10 appearances total. It's an awful return, all things considered, and the weight of the price tag only makes it look worse.

Now, of course, Isak was signed for six years and not one. There's still plenty of time for him to correct things and become a top signing for Liverpool.

But this season has highlighted the enormous risk with transfers that size. And it's one that may now put the club off similar efforts.
