Adam Wharton has long been linked with a Liverpool transfer.

The Englishman has been one of Crystal Palace's best players over the last few years and now that Marc Guehi and Ebere Eze have both left Selhurst Park, he's their knight in shining armour.

The former Blackburn Rovers ace is on the cusp of Thomas Tuchel's England squad and, with the 2026 World Cup now just around the corner, every game counts.

However, if he doesn't make it in, he may have to consider transferring to a bigger Premier League team so that he can prove his worth in another competition such as the Champions League.

And, even though he'd fit straight into Arne Slot's plans, there's an even better option that Liverpool could choose to explore this summer.

Archie Gray would be a better signing for Liverpool than Adam Wharton

Hardly any of the Reds' first-team squad have lived up to expectations this season.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Hugo Ekitike have been their best-performing players but there has even been times when they've left a lot to be desired.

If there's one thing that the 2025-26 season has proven its that Slot needs an awful lot more depth and versatility among his ranks next term.

And, even though Wharton would be a solid defensive midfielder for Liverpool, someone such as Archie Gray would be a much better option for them to explore.

Gray is two years younger than Wharton so he has a little bit more time to develop and the fact that he can be used in other positions such as right-back is a massive selling point.

And the fact that he could be available for a cut-rate fee if Tottenham end up getting relegated is also a massive bonus.

How much would Liverpool have to spend to sign Archie Gray this summer

Since arriving from Leeds United at the start of the 2024-25 season, Gray has been a regular feature for Spurs.

He's played in several defensive positions for the North London club including left-back, right-back and centre-back.

Indeed, a lot of this was out of necessity due to the number of injuries that Tottenham have suffered over the last couple of seasons but the fact that he can play there if needed is a massive bonus.

He's also chipped in with five goal contributions during his entire time in North London which is fairly impressive considering he's only been used as a defensive player.

According to a Caught Offside report, a fee worth around ยฃ70 million is what would convince Spurs to part ways with Gray this summer but, if they end up being relegated, they could end up being forced into a fire sale.

There's plenty of time before the transfer window comes around but for now, a move for Gray should seriously be considered before any other moves are made.
