Richard Hughes rejects two late €100m offers for Liverpool star

Transfer deadline day for Liverpool was fairly slow.

The Anfield outfit made a lot of their moves on bank holiday Monday with deals for Lucca Brughmans and Djylian N'Guessan being lined up before the window slammed shut.

Bradley Barcola was also welcomed on 31 August with the Frenchman being one of the Reds' most anticipated deals of the window.

After his arrival, Liverpool had four left-wingers among their ranks and only one right-winger.

However, with the way that Andoni Iraola wants his wingers to play, they all need to be versatile and able to play anywhere across the front three which is why the Reds probably aren't panicking that much about their attacking options.

In fact, the Reds are that calm about their business that they even managed to reject two triple-figure deals towards the end of the window.

A lot of Liverpool's players were linked with moves away this summer.

Some want-aways such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott were granted their wishes while others such as Federico Chiesa were told to stay put.

However, with the four new players that the Reds welcomed through the doors, there was bound to be some shuffling around of players and, one of those who were expected to exit but didn't was Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman had been linked with a move to Tottenham for most of the summer with Man City also chipping in with their interest towards the end.

And, at times, it genuinely did feel like the former PSV man was on his way out of Anfield but, as Dutch outlet ED have shared, in the end, Liverpool actually rejected their offers of €100 million for the attacker.

"Cody Gakpo is definitely staying at Liverpool. The international seemed to be on his way to Manchester City in recent days, when his current club called off the deal despite agreements," they wrote.

"Sources now report that Gakpo will not be moving to another English club either – Tottenham Hotspur was also interested.

"The former PSV player will therefore defend the colours of The Reds again this season and will have to quickly get over the disappointment of a missed transfer.

"Gakpo spoke with the owners of Liverpool yesterday, partly to clear the air. From now on, he will have to focus on the away match against Ipswich Town, which is scheduled for Friday.

"The fact that Gakpo's transfer fell through came as a complete surprise. An agreement had been reached regarding the financial terms under which Gakpo was allowed to leave Liverpool.

"Both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur were prepared to meet that package of around one hundred million euros. Gakpo subsequently chose City, but it became clear yesterday that Gakpo would not be allowed to move to City after all.

"It now appears that there will definitely be no other deal."

At the start of the summer transfer window, if you'd have told a Liverpool fan that there was going to be a €100 million (£85 million) offer on the table for Gakpo, they'd have snapped your hand off.

The 2025-26 season was far from the Dutchman's best in a Liverpool shirt as he only scored nine goals across all competitions for the Reds.

Admittedly, this probably wasn't all his fault as Arne Slot chose against playing to his strengths but, it still feels like he should've done a lot better than he did.

But, despite all of this, now that Iraola is in charge, he seems to have been given a new lease of life with some people even saying that he's been the Reds' best attacker from the start of the 2026-27 season.

Obviously, Gakpo being likely to get used out of position is probably a bit of a problem for him but, from his performance against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, he could actually be better off there.

It's still early days in the season of course so things can definitely change but, for now at least, keeping Gakpo around seems like a rather smart decision, even if the Reds don't really have a natural right-winger that they can rely on this term.
