Fabrizio Romano confirms agent contact for Liverpool transfer

Liverpool still have a lot of work to do on their team before the summer transfer window slams shut.

The Anfield outfit were expected to make changes across the board this term, especially with all the exits that they've sanctioned.

Curtis Jones is the most recent Liverpool player to have exited L4 and, while the Reds may have got a fee for his transfer, they could have got a lot more money for him if they'd have sorted his contract out properly a year or two ago.

However, that was obviously not how things panned out and now, it feels like the Reds could end up on the back foot, especially after the latest news to emerge from Anfield.

Manchester City have entered the race for Cody Gakpo

On Sunday during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Newcastle, Cody Gakpo was arguably Liverpool's best attacker.

The Dutchman scored the Reds' first goal of the season and, both on and off the ball, he seemed like the most productive player in Andoni Iraola's squad.

Indeed, this performance echoed his outings in the 2026 World Cup and it's likely to be one of the main reasons why Tottenham want to sign him this summer.

However, until the Reds manage to sign his replacement, there's no way that they can afford to sell him.

But, with there only being around a week left of the summer transfer window, decisions are certainly going to have to be made soon.

And, to make things even harder, another Premier League club have just entered the race for the 27-year-old with Fabrizio Romano confirming that they've already been in touch with his agents.

"Liverpool will only sell Cody Gakpo if they can get two wingers in next 8 days; priority remains Bradley Barcola," he wrote.

"Tottenham verbally agreed terms with Gakpo since July, Man City now also in active talks with his agents.

"Player to decide but also based on Liverpool wingers plans."

Manchester City could ruin Liverpool's season by signing Cody Gakpo

Throughout most of the summer transfer window, Liverpool have been at the centre of attention for a lot of transfers.

The Anfield outfit were expected to make many changes to their ranks and, while they've managed to add three new players to their ranks, they've already lost four members of their first-team squad.

Indeed, some players have returned from loan which has helped plug the gaps for now but, if the Reds want to get back to their best, they need to sign world-class players rather than just mediocre ones.

Man City have properly upgraded their team this summer and, although there's only around a week left before the window slams shut, they're still eyeing deals for several other players.

But, of the lot, if the Cityzens make a move for Gakpo, it could ruin Liverpool's campaign, especially if they don't get their replacement for him lined up in time.

Because, on paper, City have a much stronger squad than the Reds and, if a decent offer comes in for the former PSV man, Liverpool are very unlikely to say no.

Here's hoping that everything lines up and Liverpool don't end up worse off than they started.
