Euro giants finally ready to ‘step on the gas’ for Liverpool sensation
Liverpool have been in the headlines a lot this summer.
Whether they're being linked with players or wanting to get rid of some, a day hasn't gone by this summer where the Reds haven't been linked with a transfer of some description.
At the start of the window, the Anfield outfit were expected to make a lot of changes to their ranks.
However, that has clearly been far from the case. Of course, some additions have been made but, it still feels like a lot more work needs to be done if the Reds want to start challenging for silverware again.
Indeed, many players are still rumoured to be on their way to L4 but, until those deals have been confirmed, they obviously can't be relied upon.
But, with a decent chunk of Andoni Iraola's players still being linked with moves away, it does feel like change is definitely afoot with one European giant now stepping their chase for a Liverpool star up to another gear.
Tottenham are about to 'step on the gas' for Cody Gakpo
During Liverpool's opening Premier League game against Newcastle on Sunday, Cody Gakpo was arguably Liverpool's best player.
The Dutchman netted the Reds' first goal of the season and it did feel like he managed to roll things back a year or two with the way he performed.
Of course, this echoes his performances in the 2026 World Cup and is likely one of the main reasons why several clubs now want to sign him.
However, with the Reds not having a replacement lined up for him, they're obviously not going to move him on just yet.
But, as per a fresh update from Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, it seems like Tottenham are now ready to "step on the gas" for Gakpo and make a deal become a reality.
"Manchester City is throwing its hat into the ring for Cody Gakpo. The British top club is short on attackers and is considering buying the winger from Liverpool," he shared via X.
"Tottenham Hotspur is definitely not out of the race. The Londoners want to step on the gas once Barcola is at Anfield."
Liverpool must be smart about their plans for Cody Gakpo
As mentioned, Liverpool have been in the news for most of the summer transfer window.
Whether it's a player joining the club or a player exiting, many links have emerged.
Gakpo is definitely the most likely player to leave at the moment but, with the Reds' deals for Cody Gakpo and Ibrahim Mbaye still up in the air, no decisions can be made just yet.
However, if Tottenham end up giving a blank cheque to Liverpool, that could cause some serious issues.
That is, especially now that teams such as Manchester City are also wanting to sign the Dutchman.
If Hughes sanctions the exit of Gakpo without having a definite replacement lined up, things could go from bad to worse for Liverpool.
Here's hoping that the Reds are smart about what they do next.
