Liverpool star told he’s not good enough for a new contract

Liverpool had a lot of decisions to make over the summer.

The Anfield outfit knew that they need to make many changes to their ranks after their below-par performances last term.

Indeed, a lot of this was probably due to the way that Arne Slot had his men line up but, since Andoni Iraola has added four new players to his squad, they already look a lot better.

However, transfer decisions aren't the only choices that Liverpool have to make with several contracts from members of their first-team squad set to expire.

Alexis Mac Allister is one of Liverpool's players who's future is up in the air despite his deal expiring in 2028.

And, even though he's a regular starter, the Argentinian has now been told exactly why he hasn't been given a new contract by the Anfield outfit yet.

Over the last couple of years, Liverpool have made a habit of letting some of their best players leave Anfield for nothing.

Trent Alexander-Arnold started the trend off with Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate all following suit in the 2026-27 summer transfer window.

And, if Curtis Jones didn't get swooped up by Inter Milan this summer, he'd have also probably left for nothing next term.

A lot of Liverpool's contracts are set to run out at the end of this season with 2028 not looking much better either.

Obviously, the Reds can offer players new deals if they wanted to but, if they want to stay at the top of their game, they need to be constantly innovating and changing.

So, the fact that Mac Allister could end up being on the chopping block makes a lot of sense with BBC Sport now sharing exactly why the Argentinian wasn't offered a new deal last season.

"From the outset against Diego Simeone's side, the midfielder seemed like a man on a mission. He blazed over early on from outside the box then picked up a booking just before the half-hour mark," they wrote.

"His goal wasn't quite like the strike against Tottenham on the day the Reds won the Premier League in April 2025 - one that produced an actual seismic event, reaching a peak magnitude of 1.74 on the Richter scale - but it was more than good enough to beat one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Jan Oblak.

"And it was certainly what Iraola and the Anfield hierarchy would have wanted to see after a below-par 2025-26 campaign from Mac Allister.

"The understanding is the powers that be at Liverpool were of the belief that Mac Allister's performances did not warrant the offer of fresh terms.

"But if he can carry on like this, then it will be a question of when rather than if that offer is made for whoever replaces Richard Hughes - even if Mac Allister said he didn't know if his goal would boost his chances of a new contract."

When Jurgen Klopp was at the helm, Mac Allister was one of the first names on his team sheet.

And, even in Arne Slot's Premier League-winning season the midfielder performed fairly well.

However, last term, things just didn't click and no matter who he was partnered with or where he was played, he just didn't perform to the standards expected of him.

This led to fans demanding that he was axed from the Reds' fans but, that clearly lit a fire within him a, during the 2026 World Cup and the start of the 2026-27 season, the Argentinian has been a man on a mission.

If his performance levels keep to this standard, Liverpool should definitely offer him a new deal and allow the former Brighton man to live out his prime years with the club.

However, if he reverts back to the version of himself from the 2025-26 campaign, Liverpool just need to cut their losses and get rid.

Obviously, there's still a while before a final decision needs to be made but, for now, Iraola and the rest of Liverpool's hierarchy will be keeping a close eye on how Mac Allister performs so that they can decide what they want to do with him.
