Xabi Alonso’s comments confirms star will re-sign for Liverpool

Liverpool don't often bring back former players.

Ian Rush has probably been the most famous example after the Reds brought him back from his time at Juventus.

He went onto become the most prolific goalscorer in the club's history.

Steve Staunton is another player who was re-signed after he left the club in 1991. He returned seven years later and spent two more seasons at Anfield.

More recently, Robbie Fowler made a return from Manchester City under Rafa Benitez and Craig Bellamy came back on a free transfer after spending the previous season at Cardiff City in the Premier League.

So, in the club's history, or recent history there's only been four examples. But it's very likely that we will see more players return to Anfield in the coming years.

Including one who Xabi Alonso admires and has spoken highly of in a recent comment revealed by the player himself.

Alonso incidentally was one of those players who could have ended-up returning to Anfield. Had things turned out differently, it could be him in charge of Liverpool rather than Arne Slot.

After all, Alonso was one of the favourites to replace Jurgen Klopp back when the German announced his decision to leave the club.

Ultimately, he didn't join Liverpool and moved to Real Madrid. Making that step proves that he's one of the best young managers in world football.

Alonso has worked with some of the greatest minds in the modern game, and he's also played alongside some of the best players to have ever graced the hallowed turfs of football's history.

He is therefore a great judge of talent and he comprehends what it takes to reach those higher levels.

So when it has been unveiled that he's a big fan of an academy graduate from Liverpool, it piques your interest. And no it's not Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It's actually Tyler Morton.

In a recent interview the former Liverpool midfielder who left the club to join Lyon in the summer revealed that he came close to joining Bayer Leverkusen during the summer of 2024.

"He (Alonso) told me how highly he rates me as a player," Morton told SportsBible in an exclusive interview. "They wanted to sign me."

In the end, Liverpool didn't allow Morton to leave the club with Slot wanting to keep him as back-up option.

This summer though he finally got his move and it has really paid dividends for the young man. Morton has been flourishing at Lyon and has already established himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1.

The way he has been able to dominate games shows that he is a special talent. The fact that Alonso told him how highly he was rated also confirms just how high his potential is.

Alonso's comments are proof that Morton is destined to reach the very top of the game. Which is why he's also destined to end-up at Liverpool again and re-sign for the club.

The Reds are in need of a midfielder exactly like him and if he can continue his performances, it just feels inevitable that he will return. Just as Rush, Staunton, Fowler and Bellamy had done before him.
