Xabi Alonso OPENS door to Liverpool move
Xabi Alonso has opened the door to a move to Liverpool after his dismissal at Real Madrid.
Things have been miserable at Anfield recently so it's no surprise the club's fans want a change. Arne Slot is simply not delivering results and has a less than 50% win rate in the Premier League at the moment.
On top of results, performances have been poor as well. The Dutchman seems to have lost his touch. Sure, injuries and a lot of changes in the squad have not helped.
But Slot's management of certain situations and the way he has been unable to handle teams setting up with long balls and low-blocks against him have caused Liverpool a lot of misery.
The football on display is dire. Slot doesn't seem to be able to inspire his players nor the fans in the same way.
There's also his lack of rotation. Certain players seem to be almost exiled from playing matches. That's a stark change to Jurgen Klopp's time, who utilised every member of his squad and made them feel important.
So, a change should be on the horizon. It's now not a matter of if, it's when Slot gets sacked. The clock is ticking and Xabi Alonso's dismissal at Real Madrid may have only accelerated things.
The Spaniard is the perfect candidate to succeed Slot. Things have not worked out with him at Real Madrid and he has lost a few games here and there.
But the main and core problem Alonso faced was the stars and egos being unable to commit to his system, which requires sacrifice and hard-work.
Ultimately, Alonso leaves with a 71.9% win record. Underlying numbers of Real Madrid's performances have them leading the La Liga table with an expected points of 38.9, compared to Barcelona's 36.4 expected points, even if in reality they are four points adrift.
Alonso's side has been unlucky. Barcelona have overperformed and his sacking has been very premature.
Things would be different at Liverpool. There are fewer egos, more players ready to commit to Alonso's methods. Including two of his key stars at Bayer Leverkusen in Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.
Alonso is also adored by the Anfield crowd. He's the type of manager who would inspire everyone and he does play exciting attacking football.
The Athletic has reported that he will stay in Madrid for now, to be close to his family. However, the report also opens the door for Alonso to join Liverpool.
According to the outlet a source close to Alonso has not 'ruled out' the possibility of him taking charge of another club this season.
So, the door is ajar. Alonso to Liverpool is a possibility. Richard Hughes just needs to walk through that door and make it happen.
