Xabi Alonso drops STRONG Liverpool hint
Xabi Alonso brought up Liverpool and dropped a strong hint over his future. A return to Anfield after all?
Rewind to Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge of Liverpool and one name was far more prominent than the rest when it came to being a successor: Xabi Alonso. He was the one that made the most sense as he led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic season.
Though, Alonso ultimately wouldn’t take the job and would instead spend another year in charge of Leverkusen. From there, he joined Real Madrid in the summer - but things are not going well.
Well, we say that. They’re second in La Liga, four points off Barcelona. It’s hardly a disgraceful campaign but the real problem seems to be that Alonso hasn’t at all gelled with his players.
That puts his job into question and it’s reported that a negative result on Wednesday evening against Manchester City would bring things to a premature close. Naturally, that also has people asking him about his future.
Which has brought Liverpool back around.
Xabi Alonso and Liverpool
Alonso was asked about potentially managing in the Premier League one day and whether that would interest him. He was actually a bit more specific than that.
“For sure, it’s something to consider with the English clubs, with my former club," he said, per AS. "But for now, this is the place that I want to be, and in the future, you never know what can happen.”
That 'former club' is, of course, Liverpool and Alonso chose to bring them up unprompted there. It's particularly notable given the pressure Arne Slot is currently under.
Liverpool's season has been quite awful thus far, though a win at Inter on Tuesday evening did bring a bit of promise. Still, Slot is up against it if he wants to get the Reds moving in the right direction.
Alonso losing his job with Madrid would up that pressure dramatically, too. He's about as perfect a replacement as Liverpool could hope for - a club legend who has achieved a miracle as a manager.
Not only that but he achieved that miracle with Florian Wirtz as his star player. Honestly, it would be a shock if he never managed the Reds.
