What Virgil van Dijk told Liverpool teammates after Man United defeat
When things are down you always look towards your club captain.
Virgil van Dijk is no exception right now. Having been at the club for over seven years now, he's been in similar situations before.
Jurgen Klopp's reign was not always sunshine and rainbows. There were some great heights but also some really bleak football during covid, such as the 2020/21 campaign.
At the time Liverpool were struggling and had it not been for a bit of magic from Alisson Becker, who scored against West Bromwich Albion, the Reds may not have been able to return to the Champions League.
This season, Liverpool's four defeats in a row is a new low. Not since Brendan Rodgers' era has a similar feat been achieved by the the club.
But this is to be expected.
Liverpool were brilliant last season and then so much change and turmoil happened. Trent Alexander-Arnold left. The tragic death of Diogo Jota shocked the club to its core and still will have profound impacts on all those who knew him for an eternity.
On top of all of that, Liverpool made the attempt to change half of the starting line-up bringing in a plethora of new stars.
Under these circumstances, it was always going to be a difficult time. A time where Liverpool were not going to be consistent.
This season is a transitional one for the Reds. An opportunity for Arne Slot to build a new team and a new dynasty. Looking back Liverpool will hope that these results were just a mere blip in the road to success.
But there's no denying they need to bounce back sooner rather than later and that's why Van Dijk has spoken up in the dressing room.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, the Liverpool captain told his teammates after the defeat to Manchester United that 'mental recovery is as important as physical recovery.'
This was an emphasis ahead of the club's trip to Frankfurt, where they look to bounce back from a defeat to Galatasaray.
The German side have been very vulnerable at the back in recent games and they are not going into this in great form either.
It's a game that will give the opportunity for one or the other to get their season back on track.
If Liverpool's stars can heed Van Dijk's words then they definitely stand a chance of making a comeback. At times like this having the right mentality and attitude is all you need.
