'Unbelievable mentality': Arne Slot hails Liverpool star after new setback
Arne Slot has heaped praise on one of his Liverpool stars after a setback. An 'unbelievable mentality' might save the day.
Liverpool continued their mini-resurgence on Saturday as they beat Brighton at Anfield. It’s actually their first win at home in three attempts, having lost to Nottingham Forest and then drawn with Sunderland.
More importantly, though, this was a fifth game unbeaten in all competitions. Now, the run hasn’t been perfect - two draws against newly-promoted teams isn’t ideal - but it’s certainly a step in the right direction after an atrocious run of form.
Part of the reason why things have turned around has been a change in system. Arne Slot has moved away from his 4-2-3-1 system for the first time, with his players operating in more of a diamond formation, though it’s not quite as rigid at that.
A huge reason why that change has been even possible is the versatility within the squad. After all, it’s far from easy to build a squad for one system and then pivot mid-season.
But the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai have allowed for that. Szoboszlai has played three or four different positions for Liverpool this season, including two against Brighton.
Unfortunately, it ended with a blow.
Dominik Szoboszlai's injury
Szoboszlai went down with an ankle injury against Brighton and it's not yet known what to expect from it. Will he play against Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday? Is this the end of his year?
Slot discussed it after the game and didn't sound too positive. Though, he suggested Szoboszlai's attitude may play a role here.
“Dom, it was his ankle,” said Slot. “It didn’t look great when I just saw him.”
“But he has unbelievable mentality so let’s hope for the best."
Hopefully, that mentality can get Szoboszlai back quicker than most. Liverpool need him right now - not just because of his versatility but because he's probably been the club's best player this season.
The fact he's done that at right-back, centre-midfield, right-midfield and as a no.10 is remarkable. That's the level he's playing at this season, though, and it's helping Slot save this season.
Fingers crossed, then. Liverpool's form may just hang on Szoboszlai recovering quickly.
