A stunning offer for Curtis Jones rocked everyone on Friday evening. The truth behind it looks clear.

There was a sense of insanity on Friday as Fabrizio Romano reported that Inter had made an offer for Curtis Jones. A loan with an option to buy.

"Inter are in direct club to club talks with Liverpool for Curtis Jones on loan deal with buy option clause," he wrote on Twitter. "Inter and Liverpool, discussing today."

Now, that's a deal that makes no real sense. Liverpool are already incredibly short in their squad, with several injuries depleting what was already a relatively small senior group.

Jones is one of the few versatile enough to cover several positions. He's also one of the only remaining homegrown players after a bizarre summer cull of the group.

Letting him leave would be madness. Letting him leave on loan? That would deserve a formal inquiry.

The Curtis Jones truth

It appears Jones will not leave to join Inter before the window closes. Paul Joyce made that clear in The Times, saying Liverpool 'will not sanction' the departure of any senior players.

Joyce also reports that Inter knew the offer was a long shot but figured they should see if Liverpool were willing. So the panic over Jones leaving is gone - for the moment.

There are a couple of insinuations here, though. Firstly, everyone denying Liverpool will accept the offer makes it clear that they simply don't want to lose any first-team players right now. It's not about an unwillingness to let Jones leave, more that they can't afford to do so now.

And with 16 months remaining on his contract, that opens the door incredibly wide for a summer sale. Inter, after all, will almost certainly return with a similar offer - albeit for less than they'll have offered here.

Then there's also the question of why Inter felt this was doable. They must have had positive signs from somewhere, be it the player's side or the Liverpool side. Otherwise it's a spectacularly random offer to make so late in the window.

So while Jones won't leave this month, a picture has been painted here and it's one that shows him departing in the summer. That now looks virtually certain.
