The insane reason Liverpool won't make ANY January signings

Liverpool’s owners have been a devise topic among supporters for a while now.

Fenway Sports Group, or FSG, took over the Reds in 2010 and have overseen a complete transformation of the club.

Anfield has been redeveloped, Liverpool are back to winning trophies regularly and the club has so far avoided the financial issues that have plagued so many rivals.

FSG are by no means perfect owners though. Their attempt to join the breakaway European Super League has not been forgotten by supporters, and too frequently in recent years have the Reds been left high and dry in the transfer market.

The owners backed the club significantly in the summer, but it feels as though the January window has been almost completely ignored, and there may be a reason for Liverpool’s inactivity.

FSG distracted by issues over the pond

A significant spend was authorised by Liverpool’s American owners in the summer, but the first half of the season has clearly shown that more investment is necessary.

Arne Slot’s first title defence was over before it really began, and many supporters were hopeful that the head coach would be backed in the January window to turn things around.

The two names linked most with a Merseyside move this January were Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. Both have signed for Manchester City, one of the club’s biggest rivals.

It doesn’t feel like there are any big plans for Liverpool this winter, and that may be due in part to trouble FSG are facing with one of their other sports teams, Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox.

What is going on with the Boston Red Sox?

Fans in Boston were left enraged when it was announced Alex Bregman, who only joined the Sox in 2025, would make use of the opt-out clause in his contract this off season.

Bregman was an important player at Fenway Park, and he effectively replaced Red Sox icon Rafael Devers who left the team halfway through last season.

Bregman has now joined the Chicago Cubs as a free agent and FSG’s handling of the situation in Boston over the last 12 months has led to discontent among the Red Sox fanbase.

Dave Portnoy, owner of Barstool Sports and famous Red Sox fan, even described John Henry as the 'worst human alive’ over the Bregman situation.

FSG focus will likely be on resolving the situation at Fenway Park and more investment in Liverpool feels unlikely whilst the group are so unpopular with the Red Sox fans.
