Xabi Alonso is a much better option for Liverpool than Arne Slot.

There's a section of fans who believe that the Dutchman is still the right man for the job. Slot hasn't had it easy but his recent actions and tactics should point very obviously towards the fact that he is completely inept.

Whether it's his man-management, or whether it's his ability to find a system capable of breaking down low-blocks, Slot just doesn't have it figured out.

He's had plenty of time to get things right. He went an entire calendar year winning just over 50% of his games as manager. He has won one game in six matches in 2026, so he's on track to continue that dire run.

The way he sat back and celebrated the league title, lapping up parties in Ibiza while the season was still going on also speaks volumes.

Liverpool need a manager who is obsessed with winning. A manager who is obsessed with the game.

Slot just doesn't seem to put in his all. He doesn't seem as committed as Jurgen Klopp.

Ultimately, Liverpool need a change. Someone who is more in tune with the club's ethos and understands what it requires to work at the elite level - something Slot had never experienced as a player nor as a coach prior to arriving at Liverpool.

Some Liverpool fans point to Xabi Alonso's struggles at Real Madrid as a factor in why he would not succeed at Liverpool.

But those who suggest keeping Slot over Alonso is a preferable outcome and use Alonso's time at Madrid as a way to explain their argument are wrong.

They have no understanding of the demands Alonso was trying to implement at Madrid and the level of hubris and ego he had to face against some of his star players.

Asking Kylian Mbappe and Vini jr to work harder off the ball is not something that will ever go down well. Alonso was doomed from the beginning.

But that doesn't mean his system is wrong. Underlying metrics actually had Real Madrid leading the La Liga table based on expected points over Barcelona when Alonso was sacked.

He had an over 71% win success rate during his time in Madrid. We'd love to see anything even remotely similar at Liverpool.

Alonso is a better manager than Slot. He deals and has dealt a lot better at breaking down opposition low-blocks and he has implemented far better pressing structures than the Dutchman at a much higher level in Leverkusen compared to Slot's work at Feyenoord.

Not to mention, the big reason why Alonso is much better suited to Liverpool is because he knows how to get the best out of the club's current stars.

Florian Wirtz enjoyed his best football under Alonso. It was the same for Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool's squad is geared towards Alonso. At the same time, it's also a young squad, hungry to develop and become better without the ego of the Real Madrid squad.

The players at Liverpool are far more likely to have buy-in and to embrace Alonso's principles which will ultimately make the Reds a better team.

And that is the big reason why Alonso will simply be much better for the club than Slot.
