Star player's comments are clearest sign yet it's all over for Arne Slot
A star player's comments prove it's all over for Arne Slot with his remarks very telling about the club's faith in their head-coach.
Those who have spent much of the season warning about the Dutchman’s shortcomings will hardly have been shocked by Liverpool’s latest dismal performance.
For many supporters who remained hopeful, though, the defeat to Tottenham felt like a moment of clarity.
It raises an uncomfortable question: when was the last time Liverpool actually played well? When did watching this team feel exciting rather than painfully dull under Slot’s system?
You would have to go back quite some time. Over the past year Liverpool have gone backwards, turning into one of the weakest defending champions in recent memory as standards have collapsed.
This team simply isn’t good enough, and more fans are starting to accept that the responsibility sits squarely with the head coach.
After all, there’s only so long you can point the finger at players and referees.
Slot’s refusal to take responsibility once again over the weekend only reinforced the sense that his time in the role is coming to an end. The boos at Anfield, not from a small minority but from a large section of the crowd, told their own story.
In the eyes of many supporters, Slot simply isn’t good enough.
Results and displays have been so underwhelming that some fans are losing the desire to even attend matches at Anfield.
Under Slot, supporters are beginning to vote with both their voices and their feet. Boos ring out, and many leave the ground before the final whistle. Under Klopp, even during difficult periods, he managed to keep the fans united behind the team.
Slot does not appear to possess the same charisma or the same man-management skills that Klopp brought to the role.
If things continue on this trajectory, Liverpool risk drifting toward a far more serious crisis. That’s why many now believe his departure is becoming increasingly inevitable.
Everything points that things are heading in that direction.
Especially because Slot seems to have lost the dressing room as well. We've seen murmurs of players being unhappy, Mo Salah coming out and being critical last year, and Curtis Jones having a very fiery post-match interview after Liverpool's defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
There is no way to know what is really going on behind the scenes but you'd imagine the players won't be happy with the results and the performances.
You'd imagine they will be frustrated by everything that has gone on at Anfield.
Which is why Dominik Szoboszlai's comments to Sky Sports were so damning after the Reds' draw with Tottenham.
“I feel flat,” Szoboszlai told Sky Sports. “We have to wake up because if we carry on like this, we should be happy with the Conference League.”
“I don’t know why this is happening, I honestly don’t know.
“I think in the first half we played very well, we controlled the whole game and they hardly created chances apart from one or two headers. Second half we just didn’t so the same things.”
This doesn't scream of a player having confidence in his teammates or even his head-coach. Imagine something like this being said under Jurgen Klopp, the players would never have such little confidence.
That's why these comments are the clearest sign yet that it's all over for Slot at Liverpool. He simply cannot motivate or fill his players with confidence and if you can't do that then you can't be the manager of this club.
