A club president has confirmed he is going to have to sell his star player, with Liverpool interested in him.

The madness is about to begin again. We're closing in on the opening of the January transfer window and it might not be as quiet for the Reds as expected.

Richard Hughes probably needs to make a few additions. Whether he will is another matter. The club has never been known to panic buy.

Liverpool are always very measured in their approach. They are not a club who will rush into transfers and who will spend because they have a few injuries. Their recruitment is based on a long-term strategy.

So, they are only going to move for players who they see as elite options not just for the now but for the future of the club.

This includes Antoine Semenyo, who has a £65m release clause and is expected to be available. Liverpool are long-term admirers and they are one of the many clubs ready to activate that clause.

It is believed Semenyo's preference is towards Liverpool. But a lot can still happen until the window opens so it remains to be seen whether this deal does go through.

There's also the prospect of signing Marc Guehi, although that looks far more likely to happen on a free in the summer, but again that also depends on the player himself and where he wants to go.

Other centre-back options include Jeremy Jacquet. He could be available and he is someone Liverpool scouts have raved about recently after his emergence at Rennes.

Another player on Liverpool's radar as well as Newcastle United and Brighton according to TEAMtalk is Alex Toth.

The 20-year-old Ferencvaros midfielder is also appreciated by a number of Bundesliga clubs and he's reportedly available for €15m.

It remains to be seen how strong Liverpool's interest is. But Ferencvaros' president Gabor Kubatov confirmed in an interview to M4 Sport that he's ready to sell his star player if the right offer arrives.

"We don't have an offer for him," Kubatov said.

"But I see that all the big teams in the world are here, watching him. If we get a serious offer for him, we have to let him go.

"It's good for him, and it's compensation for us that we can do well financially. I am convinced that the sale of Alex Tóth will be one of the biggest player sales in Hungary.

"This will not only elevate us, Ferencváros, but also Hungarian football to a higher level. Of course, your heart hurts, it would be nice to see him again, he has fantastic solutions on the pitch, he is the engine of the team. He has a very good character, there is no arrogance in him. If an offer comes for him, you have to be able to let him go."

This pretty much opens the door for Toth to move in January. Who will make that offer remains to be seen. He won't be short of suitors, that's for sure.
