Slamming Mo Salah ignores what's REALLY happening at Liverpool

Mo Salah faces criticism after an explosive interview on Saturday evening that questioned how things work at Liverpool. But slamming the winger ignores what he's actually saying.

No, a player probably shouldn't air dirty laundry. It's perfectly find to criticise Mo Salah for saying what he said and at the end of the day, no player is entitled start every single week based of what they've done before.

Salah has not been good this season, struggling to get involved in matches and failing to generate chances for either himself or the team. He's snatching at shots and simply failing to be the player he was last season.

And so speaking out as he did, creating a toxic atmosphere (though, that should probably be 'more toxic') was wrong. Players shouldn't do that.

It's naturally led to him being labelled 'selfish and disrespectful'. He's got people calling him 'embarrassing' for it. Salah is getting pelters from a lot of quarters for speaking out.

Now, you can argue all day whether that's right or wrong. But focusing on Salah here is ignoring the point of what he's saying.

Because no matter what you think of him speaking out publicly like this, he's shone a bright light on things behind the scenes. And they do not sound good.

The real story here

The real story isn't that Salah is unhappy at being dropped but that's what most people/outlets/talking heads are going with. But it's not even clear if Salah is angry or confused at being dropped.

"Now I'm sitting on the bench and I don't know why," he said. "It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That's how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.

"I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am in the bench for three games so I can't say they keep the promise."

That's not Salah whining about being a sub. That's Salah talking out about not even knowing why he's on the bench. That's him wanting to know why he was given promises in the summer and then seen them walked back on without explanation.

"I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don't have any relationship," he said. "I don't know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn't want me in the club."

Again, this is not how you treat a club legend and this is not how you treat someone who was the world's best player last season. Drop Salah if you must but you've got to do that in a way that he understands.

"I did [ask for an explanation]," said Salah. "I did, but I don't see an explanation.

"Like I knew yesterday that I was not going to play and that's it, so take it and swallow it and go home."

The story here is not that Salah spoke out. The story here is not that Salah has been dropped. The story here is that behind the scenes, things are not working.

Liverpool are in their worst run of form since the 1950s. The reaction to that has been absolutely minimal, with the main change being dropping Mo Salah - something that hasn't actually worked.

How have we ended up in a spot where Salah is feeling like a scapegoat while he watches the team struggle to draws against Sunderland and Leeds United? Why is he the only one dropped? It sounds like that hasn't even been explained to him let alone us.

This is a player who is either being forced out or is being handled in a shockingly poor way that likely will force him out. No matter what you think of his decision to speak publicly, the story here is still that he felt he had to.

'No one is bigger than the club' is a common phrase at times like this and absolutely a correct one. But it doesn't just apply to players. Mo Salah is a massive part of this club right now and legends simply should not find themselves in this position.
