A special and unique player is now believed to prefer a move to Anfield above any other and Liverpool are ready to strike an agreement.

We thought after the business conducted over the course of the summer that we would not see many new arrivals at the club in January.

Perhaps one, maybe just maybe Liverpool might have moved for Marc Guehi given the fact that they missed out on him but that moved always felt more destined to go through when he became a free agent.

Now though, fast forward to the present and it feels like Liverpool are gearing up for a more busy winter transfer period than they expected.

As we are speaking, Arne Slot has just two fit centre-back options, with Joe Gomez ruled out for several weeks and Giovanni Leoni being out for the season. Strengthening in that department looks like an absolute necessity.

But Liverpool are also lacking on the wings.

Having lost Mo Salah to the African Cup of Nations, there's a real shortage of depth now. Cody Gakpo is injured. Luis Diaz has departed the club.

And without them Liverpool don't necessarily have the players who can take players on and be a real threat in one vs one situations.

This is a glaring problem in the squad right now. Slot lacks speed and he lacks players who can take a few defenders on and create space. These are the type of players who would especially be useful against low-blocks, the type of defences Liverpool have come up against and struggled.

So it's no surprise that as Anfield Watch understands Liverpool are among the clubs ready to trigger Antoine Semenyo's Β£65m release clause in January, and thus strike an agreement with the player himself.

Now The Guardian have reported on Semenyo's future as well, and they claim that the Bournemouth winger would prefer a move to Liverpool with the Reds being his first choice, followed by Man City.

That's great to hear. It looks like Richard Hughes' plan is working, and it's nice to see a player again having Liverpool as their first-choice, especially when Semenyo is coveted by so many other clubs as well.

The 25-year-old is exactly the type of player who we described Liverpool are missing right now. Semenyo is really powerful and strong, he's two-footed which makes him unpredictable not only in his shooting but his dribbling as well because he can go either side and it's no surprise he's one of the best in the league for take-ons completed.

His ability in tight spaces could give Liverpool a new dimension.

Currently in his prime years, this is a no brainer, and with Semenyo's preference now clear as well, Liverpool simply have to get the deal over the line and activate that release clause.

That's what the club is planning to do. They are ready to make that move. But until the deal is over the line, you just never know. Anything can happen. Guehi is unfortunately a stark reminder of that.
