Seismic shift coming at Liverpool after bombshell agreement

A seismic shift is coming at Liverpool after a bombshell agreement. This is huge.

Journalist Ahmed Alajlan reports on Twitter that Richard Hughes has agreed a contract with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. The suggestion here is that Hughes will depart Liverpool and take over in Saudi Arabia at the end of the season.

In fact, he claims that Hughes’s ‘assistant team’ will start immediate work with Al-Hilal while they wait. The movement is happening and Liverpool’s sporting director is reportedly on his way out.

Now, we’ll see what comes of this. There aren’t many sources reporting it and we’ve seen similar claims debunked.

But this would be a seismic one for Liverpool. Losing your sporting director always is, of course, but especially at this particular moment.

It could well be a disaster for Arne Slot.

The Richard Hughes effect

Hughes has been the overseer of this Liverpool rebuild. He's the one breaking transfer records and moving players on - but it's a rebuild that hasn't actually worked.

The Reds moved considerably backwards this season, with the squad looking imbalanced. It means that any replacement for Hughes would have a license to change things up again, moving the squad into a new direction with a new vision.

That would mean signings and sales once again. But it's a massive blow for Slot - Hughes, after all, is the one who hired him and the one who backs him above all.

But a new sporting director would be well within his right to chase a new head coach. Someone to front his vision, rather than the holdover from Hughes's time. With Slot under pressure anyway, a change actually feels completely inevitable.

Thus Hughes accepting that job - if it's indeed true - will have a seismic hit on Liverpool. It changes the short-term and long-term vision for the squad but also brings about a change in head coach.

A new-look Liverpool may be right around the corner. Again.
